Job summary

Electricity Supply Board in Dublin seeks a Regulatory economist to join the Regulation and Compliance team. You will analyse market rules, assess their commercial impact, and help shape policy in the SEM across Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the GB energy market.

This role blends in-person collaboration at our Fitzwilliam 27 office with Smart Working, requires travel to Brussels/Dublin/London as needed, and offers mentoring, hybrid working, and strong career development within ESB.

You will join an experienced Regulation team that is at the centre of many of the challenges and projects in our generation business.

As we operate across jurisdictions you will have the opportunity to develop subject matter expertise in a wide variety of topics across the Single Electricity Market (SEM) of Ireland, Northern Ireland, and the GB energy market.

Key Responsibilities
  • Ensure you understand the market rules and the impact they have on commercial success.
  • Use economic principles to review and analyse the impact of any industry rules.
  • Communicate the impact of regulatory and energy policy decisions on the Business.
  • Consider changes in rules that can improve commercial returns.
  • Work closely with other teams across the generation business and wider.
  • Consider the impact of renewable generation on future market designs.
Experience and Qualifications
  • A drive to learn more, be inquisitive, and be a positive member of a team.
  • Bring a real demonstrable grounding/interest in economics and applying it to real world problems.
  • Have a real interest in getting to the root of a problem and applying analytical skills.
  • Have a flair to collate and present results in a quick and understandable manner.
  • Be interested in the commercial impact that regulation has so that we can fund the future and compete.
  • Be able to use office skills to manage your own workload and to support others.
  • Being able to talk to others is going to be key.
  • Third-level qualification (economics/engineering/technical/legal/commercial are preferable), or equivalent qualification. Equivalentwork experience reflecting deep analysis and interpretation, scenario /risk management and effective team engagement may also be suitable.
  • 3+ years’ experience in energy markets, renewables development, or regulatory affairs.
  • Strong understanding of market design, regulatory frameworks, and commercial impacts.
  • Flair for using statistics and economics to complete basic modelling or analysis to assess outcomes.
Location

This position will be based in our newstate of the art Fitzwilliam 27 office in Dublin, as the primary in-person location for collaboration and connecting with colleagues. In person meetings will be a feature of the role, and may also involve overseas travel occasionally (e.g. Brussels/Dublin/London).

Smart Working at ESB is designed to make ‘in-person’ time together as purposeful as possible while also enabling the effective use of digital tools and hybrid arrangements to preserve our commitment to flexibility. The successful candidate may work flexibly within the jurisdiction where they have been employed, with attendance at the workplace for in-person collaboration at least two days per week. All Smart Working arrangements are subject to regular review based on the operational requirements of the role, the team, and the business.
