Job summary

Focus Ireland's The Extension Service in Dublin seeks a part-time, permanent Project Worker to provide information, advice and support to young people aged 16-26 who are homeless or at risk. You will work within the Extension Day Service team, maintain records, run sessions, and help access housing, welfare, education and health services.

Required is a degree in social care or CORU registration plus at least two years of relevant experience; strong communication and organisational skills are

Responsibilities

  • Provide information, advice and guidance to young people accessing The Extension service.
  • Deliver information sessions and practical workshops.
  • Support young people with accessing housing, welfare, education, training and health services.
  • Maintain accurate records, case notes and referrals.
  • Work collaboratively within the Extension Day Service team.

Project Worker , Advice & Information, The Extension

Location: Dublin

Contract: Part-Time, Permanent

The Extension Service is an open-access youth drop-in centre for young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness. It frequently serves as the first point of contact for young people who are sleeping rough or accessing homeless accommodation.

What you will do:

  • To work within the framework of the overall objectives, policies and procedures of Focus Ireland and the Youth Services Department.

  • To provide a safe, welcoming and inclusive environment for young people aged 16-26 who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

  • To act as a primary source of information, advice and guidance for young people accessing The Extension service.

  • To provide accurate, up-to-date information regarding housing options, welfare supports, education and training opportunities, employment services, healthcare, legal rights and other relevant community supports.

  • To support young people in understanding and accessing their rights, entitlements and available services, with particular focus on homelessness prevention and early intervention.

  • To assist young people in completing applications, forms and referrals relating to housing, social welfare, healthcare, education, training and other supports.

  • To deliver brief interventions, information sessions and practical workshops that equip young people with the knowledge and skills required to navigate services and make informed decisions.

  • To establish positive and trusting relationships with young people.

  • To work collaboratively as part of the Extension Day Service team, sharing responsibility for the day‑to‑day operation of the drop‑in centre, supporting young people with practical needs, and fostering a welcoming, respectful and inclusive atmosphere.

  • To maintain accurate records, case notes, referral information, daily logs and statistical data.

  • To attend meetings, supervision and training as required.

  • To undertake other duties as reasonably assigned.

What you will need:

  • A Third Level qualification at degree level in the area of social care i.e. youth work, social studies, addiction, psychology, etc and/or be a CORU registered Social Care Worker

  • At least two years’ relevant experience working with vulnerable, disadvantaged or marginalised young people.

  • Experience providing information, advice, advocacy, support or signposting services.

  • Knowledge of the issues affecting young people who are homeless or at risk of homelessness.

  • Excellent communication and organisational skills.

  • Experience working within homelessness, youth work or community‑based services (Desirable).
