Job summary

Vertiv Ireland Limited is seeking a R&D / Product Development Engineer to design and develop products for a busbar trunking portfolio. You will create 3D models and 2D drawings, define specifications, and ensure compliance with safety standards.

You will work with cross‑functional teams, build prototypes, perform DFMEA, and support NPDI processes while maintaining documentation and PLM records.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years’ experience in product design/mechanical design in manufacturing.
  • Strong CAD skills with Creo or SolidWorks and ability to produce GD&T drawings.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop new products and enhancements for our portfolio.
  • Define product specs and ensure compliance with safety standards.
  • Create 3D models and 2D drawings using Creo or SolidWorks.
  • Ensure designs meet IEC 61439 and UL857 and validate via prototypes.
  • Maintain engineering documentation and support NPDI processes.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Manufacturing, Sales and Marketing.

Job Description

R&D / Product Development Engineer Location: Burnfoot, Ireland Shape the future of critical infrastructure with Vertiv. What you'll be doing
  • Design and develop new products and enhancements for our busbar trunking portfolio.
  • Define product specifications, features and functionality while ensuring compliance with relevant safety and regulatory standards.
  • Create detailed 3D models and 2D engineering drawings using Creo, SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software.
  • Design products in accordance with international standards including IEC 61439 and UL857.
  • Build and evaluate prototypes to validate product performance and design concepts.
  • Conduct Design Failure Mode & Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and support product risk assessments.
  • Work closely with suppliers to source components and materials for new product development.
  • Support the New Product Development Introduction (NPDI) process and maintain accurate engineering documentation.
  • Manage engineering changes for existing products through the Engineering Change process.
  • Organise and maintain engineering drawings and documentation within PLM systems.
  • Collaborate with Product Management, Manufacturing, Sales and Marketing teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Keep up to date with emerging technologies, manufacturing methods and industry trends to drive continuous product innovation.
What we're looking for
  • Essential Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Product Design, Design Technology or a related discipline.
  • 3+ years' experience in product design or mechanical design within a manufacturing environment.
  • Strong CAD skills using Creo, SolidWorks or equivalent.
  • Experience producing detailed engineering drawings, including GD&T, first and third angle projection.
  • Knowledge of Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems.
  • Excellent problem-solving and analytical skills.
  • Strong organisational and time management skills with the ability to manage multiple projects.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively across cross-functional teams.
  • Desirable Experience or knowledge in any of the following would be an advantage: Power distribution products or the data centre industry.
  • Desirable Design of sheet metal fabrications, welded assemblies and plastic moulded components.
  • Desirable Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA) and Design for Environment (DFE).
  • Desirable Process Flow, PFMEA, Control Plans and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs).
  • Desirable Microsoft Office, Smartsheet and other engineering/business applications.
