Job summary

Amazon Relational Database Service (Amazon RDS) is seeking a Principal Engineer for the Database Fleet Management team. You will own the technical vision for software updates at massive scale, driving patching orchestration, intelligent scheduling, deployment pipelines, and fleet lifecycle management across engineers in Europe and the US.

You will mentor teams, shape architecture decisions, and partner with product stakeholders to balance long-term platform investments with near-term delivery,

Qualifications

• Experience designing, building, operating, and managing large-scale distributed systems.
• Experience leading architecture and design (patterns, reliability, scaling) of new and current systems.
• Experience with AWS technologies.
• Experience leading engineering teams as a mentor or tech lead.

Responsibilities

• Architect fleet update systems delivering minimal-downtime updates to millions of database instances.
• Drive cross-cutting technical strategy across scheduling, orchestration, deployment, and customer experience.
• Design and deliver highly scalable distributed systems with demanding availability and throughput.
• Innovate to reduce update latency and customer impact via intelligent scheduling and progressive rollout strategies.
• Mentor engineers, promote operational excellence, and participate in design reviews.
• Partner with product and business stakeholders to translate customer pain points into technical strategy.
• Influence AWS-wide on fleet management, lifecycle automation, and software delivery best practices.
