Job summary

Medtronic is seeking a Principal Software Engineer to provide technical leadership across the software lifecycle for medical device products. You will design, develop, verify, and continuously improve software solutions, mentor engineers, and partner with cross-functional teams to deliver compliant, high-quality products that support cardiac care technologies.

Qualifications

  • 7+ years of relevant software engineering experience or 5+ years with advanced degree.
  • Experience with established software development lifecycle processes.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies and TDD.

Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, and test software for medical devices in compliance with software development standards.
  • Lead project planning activities including scope, effort estimation, and delivery for complex initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and engineering best practices to engineers.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define and deliver technical solutions.
  • Drive process improvements to enhance software quality, efficiency, and compliance.
  • Develop reusable frameworks and patterns to increase velocity and maintainability.
  • Ensure timely delivery of high-quality software products.

A Day in The Life Of

As a Principal Software Engineer, you will provide technical leadership across the software development lifecycle for medical device products. You will lead the design, development, verification, and continuous improvement of software solutions while driving engineering excellence, mentoring software engineers, and partnering with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver compliant, high-quality products that support cardiac care technologies.

This Principal Software Engineer role will contribute to the design and delivery of software solutions that support critical cardiac care technologies at global scale.

Key Responsibilities
  • Design, develop, and test software for medical devices in compliance with software development standards,.
  • Lead project planning activities, including scope definition, effort estimation, technical execution, and delivery commitments for complex software initiatives.
  • Provide technical leadership, coaching, mentoring, and software engineering best practices to junior and senior software engineers.
  • Collaborate with product engineering, software test, systems, and architecture teams to define and deliver technical solutions.
  • Conduct technical reviews of requirements, specifications, architecture, design documentation, source code, and other engineering deliverables.
  • Drive process improvement initiatives that enhance software quality, development efficiency, compliance, and team effectiveness.
  • Develop reusable frameworks, design patterns, and engineering approaches that increase team velocity and long-term maintainability.
  • Partner with internal and external stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of high quality software products.
Required Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree (Level 8) in Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related technical discipline and a minimum of 7 years of relevant software engineering experience; or an advanced degree and a minimum of 5 years of relevant software engineering experience.
  • Experience designing, developing, and verifying software using established software development lifecycle processes.
  • Experience with Agile software development methodologies and Test-Driven Development (TDD).
  • Expertise in at least two of the following technologies: XML, C++, Java, JavaScript, C#, .NET, Python, or HTML.
  • Experience participating in software design, technical review, code review, and software verification activities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience developing software for medical devices.
  • Knowledge of medical device software standards and regulatory expectations, including IEC 62304.
  • Experience leading software engineering teams through technical mentoring, coaching, and engineering best-practice adoption.
  • Experience working within cross-functional product development environments involving product, systems, architecture, and test engineering teams.
  • Experience developing reusable software frameworks, components, or design patterns that improve engineering efficiency and software quality.
