Job summary

Optum is seeking a Principal Data Engineer to lead the design, build and evolution of data solutions driving new products for U.S. healthcare. The role sits at the intersection of engineering, analytics and business strategy, shaping scalable, trusted data platforms and enabling AI capabilities.

You will work in a hybrid model with Ireland-based teams, contributing to cloud-native data products while mentoring engineers and aligning with security and governance standards.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or equivalent professional experience.
• Experience leading data product teams while remaining hands-on in design and delivery.
• Proven experience building scalable data platforms, data warehouses, or lakehouse solutions in the cloud.
• Strong SQL and programming in Python, Java, or Scala.

Responsibilities

• Lead hands-on data engineering for strategic initiatives and set technical direction.
• Design multitenant architecture with tenant isolation and data privacy.
• Build scalable data products and platform components with modern cloud practices.
• Collaborate with product, AI, architecture, security, governance, and engineering teams.
• Establish standards for data modeling, quality, lineage, observability, and security.
• Create reusable patterns to improve delivery consistency and reduce duplication.
• Mentor engineers and guide architectural decisions.
