Job summary

Rapid7 is seeking a Principal AI Engineer to define the technical direction for LLMs and agentic AI across security products. You will stay hands-on with the hardest problems while guiding teams on model strategy, optimization, and deployment.

You will lead design reviews, mentor staff, and drive measurable customer outcomes by balancing cost, latency and accuracy in large-scale AI systems.

Qualifications

• Deep understanding of transformer architectures and training concepts.
• Experience building production AI systems used across multiple teams.
• Strong communication of complex trade-offs to non-technical audiences.

Responsibilities

• Define architecture and roadmap for LLM and agentic AI systems.
• Lead model strategy: frontier vs open-source models, fine-tuning, distillation, post-training.
• Prototype and implement critical model, training and inference code.
• Mentor engineers and shape product and platform investments.
• Establish evals as release gates for AI systems.
