Job summary

Mercor is seeking meticulous Japanese annotators to build training data for Japanese documents. Native fluency in kanji, hiragana and katakana is required, including furigana and variant forms.

You will transcribe, annotate structure, and record reading order for publicly accessible PDFs. You will identify page regions, assign types, link regions to figures or tables, and ensure exact character-level transcription.

Qualifications

• Native Japanese speaker with full command of kanji, hiragana, katakana, including furigana and variant forms.
• Experience in interpretation, transcription, translation, editorial work, or document-intensive work.
• Exact, character-level accuracy matters more than speed.
• Systematic, consistent application of a taxonomy across pages.
• Comfortable with unfamiliar layouts: vertical text, multi-column documents.

Responsibilities

• Source documents: find a publicly accessible Japanese PDF in an assigned document type, containing multimodal elements, and record the source.
• Annotate structure: identify and bound every meaningful region and assign a component type and reading-order index.
• Record relationships: link each region to the figure or table it belongs to through a parent component identifier.
• Transcribe faithfully: reproduce all text exactly as it appears, including kanji, hiragana, katakana, furigana, handwritten content.
• Capture page metadata: language, document type, source, page dimensions, and flags for tables, formulas and handwriting.
• Review a colleague's work: every task is reviewed end to end by a second Japanese expert.
