Job summary

Vertiv is seeking a Pre‑Sales Engineer to design integrated power solutions at system level, translating validated product mixes into precise SLDs and layouts within customer buildings. You will perform electrical calculations, coordinate with mechanical and EPMS disciplines, and ensure feasibility, safety, and timely delivery for engineered solutions.

The role involves collaboration with customers, consultants and suppliers during proposals, with limited travel.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical preferred) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in electrical design, pre-sales engineering or integrated solution design.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals: network calculations, protection coordination, withstand rating.
  • Experience with data centre power architecture, power skids or comparable engineered systems.
  • Working knowledge of IEC/IEEE, CE/UKCA and EMEA national codes, and of CAD, BIM and network‑calculation tooling.
  • Power-system simulation and digital‑twin based design validation: able to validate architectures and de‑risk designs before release, and to interpret the results.
  • Strong written and verbal English; additional EMEA languages an advantage.
  • Preferred: exposure to grid‑interaction studies (power simulation, BESS, Microgrid) and to MV switchgear applications.

Responsibilities

  • Act as system blueprint integrator: translate a validated product mix into precise single‑line diagrams and site‑specific layouts.
  • Carry out electrical engineering behind the design: load and short‑circuit calculations, network calculations and withstand rating.
  • Integrate mechanical, electrical, control and EPMS disciplines into one coherent solution.
  • Interpret customer requirements, specifications and tender documentation, and translate them into a buildable design.
  • Coordinate technically with customers, consultants and suppliers during the proposal phase.
  • Work with design engineering and the factories to validate feasibility, cost and lead time before commitment.
  • Apply design‑for‑safety in every SLD and layout: protection coordination, arc‑flash mitigation, clearances and safe maintainability.
  • Use simulation and digital‑twin validation to confirm performance and de‑risk the design before it is released to the customer.
  • Hand over cleanly to Engineering‑to‑Order (ETO) at the agreed trigger point, with assumptions, exclusions and open items documented.
  • Contribute reusable building blocks and standard configurations to the engineering library.
  • Use CPQ, configurators, design automation and AI‑enabled tools to shorten design cycle time, applying engineering judgement to validate every output.
  • Support Technical Sales with the technical content of complex proposals.

Job description

Job Description

At Vertiv, we’re on a mission to empower the people that will power the future. From a simple swipe to life‑changing medicines, from push notifications to generative AI. We design, manufacture, and service the products and solutions that keep the world connected. With $6.9 billion in sales, a strong customer base and global reach spanning nearly 70 countries, we are uniquely positioned to deliver greater value to our customers and create new opportunities for our people.

Role purpose

The Pre‑Sales Engineer designs integrated power solutions during the proposal phase (power skids, power rooms, modular data centres and cable landing stations) where the opportunity needs more than product selection. The role works at system level: single‑line diagrams, design definition and the electrical engineering behind them.

Role scope

System‑level design in the proposal phase across mechanical, electrical, control and EPMS disciplines, for opportunities that require an engineered rather than a configured solution.

Key Accountabilities
  • Act as system blueprint integrator: translate a validated product mix into precise single‑line diagrams and site‑specific physical layouts within the customer’s actual building footprint.
  • Carry out the electrical engineering behind the design: load and short‑circuit current calculations, network calculations and withstand rating, supported by the Pre‑Sales Electrical Engineer for detailed studies.
  • Integrate the mechanical, electrical, control and EPMS (Electrical Power Monitoring System) disciplines into one coherent solution, coordinating the Pre‑Sales Electrical Engineer and the Senior CAD Engineer on assigned opportunities.
  • Hand over cleanly to Engineering‑to‑Order (ETO) at the agreed trigger point, with assumptions, exclusions and open items documented, and flag long‑lead‑time items early enough for production to act.
Working Model And Level Expectations
  • Customer engagement: Moderate: technical coordination with customers, consultants and suppliers.
  • Travel expectation: Low to moderate; design workshops, customer meetings and site visits.
  • Typical work: Single‑line diagrams, design definition, electrical calculations, multidisciplinary integration.
  • Decision profile: Owns the design of assigned solutions; escalates architectural and feasibility questions.
  • Leadership expectation: Technical coordination across disciplines and with third parties. Technical lead on assigned opportunities: guides and reviews the work of the Pre‑Sales Electrical and CAD Engineers; mentors colleagues.
Role Differentiators
  • Designs the solution rather than selecting products.
  • Works across mechanical, electrical, control and EPMS rather than a single discipline.
  • Operates in the proposal phase, before order intake; the hand‑off to ETO follows.
Qualifications And Experience
  • Bachelor's degree in engineering (electrical preferred) or equivalent practical experience.
  • Minimum 5-8 years of experience in electrical design, pre‑sales engineering or integrated solution design.
  • Strong electrical engineering fundamentals: network calculations, protection coordination, withstand rating.
  • Experience with data centre power architecture, power skids or comparable engineered systems.
  • Working knowledge of IEC/IEEE, CE/UKCA and EMEA national codes, and of CAD, BIM and network‑calculation tooling.
  • Power‑system simulation and digital‑twin based design validation: able to validate architectures and de‑risk designs before release, and to interpret the results.
  • Strong written and verbal English; additional EMEA languages an advantage.
  • Preferred: exposure to grid‑interaction studies (power simulation, BESS, Microgrid) and to MV switchgear applications.
Core Competencies
  • System‑level design
  • Electrical engineering depth
  • Multidisciplinary integration
  • Attention to detail
  • Technical coordination
  • Documentation quality
  • Feasibility judgement
  • Collaboration with factories
Indicative Success Measures
  • On‑time delivery of integrated designs (SLDs, layouts, technical submittals) against proposal due dates.
  • First‑time‑right: designs passing internal design review without major rework.
  • Clean ETO handovers: no engineering change orders (ECOs) attributable to missing assumptions, exclusions or design errors.
  • Reuse rate: share of designs built from validated building blocks; contributions to the engineering library.
  • Feedback from Technical Sales, customers and ETO on clarity, responsiveness and technical quality.
Time Travel Required
  • 10%
