Offer Description

Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as a post-doctoral researcher with the School of Law at the University of Galway, Ireland.

This position is funded by European Union (Grant agreement ID: 101177204) and is available from 1 October 2025 to contract end date of 30 April 2028.

The successful candidate will be employed to undertake research and management duties for the Horizon Europe-funded 3-year project EMMELO: European Men, Masculinity and Extremist Leadership Online (1 May 2025 to 30 April 2028). Based at the School of Law, University of Galway, the Postdoctoral Researcher will work in a cross-European, interdisciplinary environment alongside senior academics, postdoctoral researchers, research assistants and project partners from civil society and the think tank sector. EMMELO examines the role of masculinity in extremist movements online across Europe and the threats it poses to democracy, fundamental rights and EU values. It focuses on six countries: Ireland, Sweden, France, Hungary, Germany and Slovakia. EMMELO’s consortium is composed of leading universities based in each of the six countries, along with the Institute for Strategic Dialogue, a think tank working to combat online extremism, and European Alternatives, a civil society organization working across Europe to promote democracy and equality. EMMELO will develop the Gender and Online Extremism (GOE) Digital Observatory, which will provide new, rich, accessible, cross-European understanding of the gender-based communication styles, narratives, and methods used by extremists and their leadership online. To disseminate the project’s findings, EMMELO will devise the T.A.L.K. Toolkit, a comprehensive, innovative, free-to-use digital resource designed to build the capacities of those working in the areas of anti-extremism and pro-democracy to identify and counter these harmful gender narratives and their effects.

Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on14 August 2025. It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date and time.

Interviews are planned to be held on 21 and 22 August 2025 online.
