University of Limerick invites applications for a Post Doctoral Researcher (Level 1) in Electropolymerisation. The role focuses on creating interfacially electrosynthesized conducting polymer films with enhanced conductivity and stability for biointerfaces and energy devices.
Based in the Department of Chemical Science, the project targets roll-to-roll manufacturing pathways and techno-economic benchmarking for industrial-scale production. Informal enquiries to Dr Micheal Scanlon are welcome.

JOB SYNOPSIS
Advanced electronics, biointerfaces, and energy technologies demand conductive thin films that combine high conductivity, long-term stability, flexibility, and scalable manufacturing. Current benchmark materials, such as PEDOT:PSS, are limited by compromised conductivity arising from insulating additives, inadequate long-term stability, and suboptimal biocompatibility. This project will develop a transformative interfacial electrosynthesis platform for the production of conducting polymer (CP) films that overcome these limitations. The successful postdoctoral researcher will establish a comprehensive performance dataset demonstrating that interfacially electrosynthesized CP films match or exceed the conductivity, stability, and biocompatibility of state-of-the-art PEDOT:PSS materials. They will develop prototype thin films and demonstrator devices, including biointerfaces, supercapacitors, and photovoltaic systems, while also defining a pathway toward industrial-scale production through roll-to-roll manufacturing and techno-economic benchmarking against existing CP fabrication methods. Collectively, these outcomes will provide the technical and commercial validation needed to accelerate translation of the technology from laboratory-scale innovation to real-world applications and commercial adoption.
