University of Galway invites applications for a full-time, fixed-term Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the project ‘High Step-down Power Converter Topologies for AI Computing with Optimal 3D Transformers-on-silicon’ in the School of Engineering, based in the Power Electronics Research Centre (PERC), Galway, in collaboration with Tyndall National Institute.
The project is funded by Research Ireland under the RINN Semiconductors Centre and runs from 1 January 2027 to 31 December 2028.
Applications are invited from suitably qualified candidates for a full-time, fixed term position as Postdoctoral Researcher to work on the project ‘High Step-down Power Converter Topologies for AI Computing with Optimal 3D Transformers-on-silicon’ in the School of Engineering. The position will be based in the Power Electronics Research Centre (PERC), Electrical & Electronic Engineering at the University of Galway, Ireland in close collaboration with the Tyndall National Institute.
This project is funded by Research Ireland under the RINN Semiconductors Centre and is available from 1st January 2027 to contract end date of 31st December 2028.
Rinn Semiconductorsis part of a constellation of seven major new centres which collectively represent an investment of €460Min advanced researchby the Government of Ireland. Rinn Semiconductorsaims to lead Ireland’s response to the end of Moore’s Law scaling, the point where traditional improvements in computer chips slowsdownor ends,by pioneering modular integrated circuit-based (chiplet-based) semiconductor design and integration. With deepexpertisein the areas of Heterogeneous Integration and AdvancedPackaging, theRinn Semiconductorsteam propose to enable transformative advances in these technologiesand to apply them in three main applicationareas: Future Internet, Sustainable Energy and Environment, and Digital Healthcare.
A keyobjectiveof theRinnis to foster deep collaboration across the sevenuniversities and institutions involved, byleveragingthe semiconductor fabrication facilities at Tyndall, ultimately creatinga cohesive “atom to systems” value chain in Ireland, connecting everything from basic materials researchthroughto complete technology solutions. The Rinn willoperatein close collaboration withIreland’svibrant semiconductor industrysector which supports20,000 high skilled jobs andincludes world leading multinational companies, small and medium sizedenterprisesand start-ups.
Within RINN Semiconductors, this project relates to the Heterogeneous Integration theme, which aims to develop processes for integrating photonic (lasers, modulators, detectors) and electronic components (amplifiers, antennae, inductors) on the same substrate using advanced packaging processes such as micro-transfer printing (MTP).
The project is led by University of Galway and involves close collaboration with the Tyndall National Institute, where other projects will focus on the development and characterisation of magnetics-on-silicon devices and advanced heterogeneous integration packaging technologies.
Salary: Postdoctoral Researcher salary scale €47,273 - €60,250 per annum, (subject to the project’s funding limitations), and pro rata for shorter and/or part-time contracts.
Closing date for receipt of applications is 17:00 (Irish Time) on 20th November 2026. It will not be possible to consider applications received after the closing date.
