Qualifications

Postdoctoral Researcher in Human-Centred AI and Digital Health Background NetwellCASALA ( at Dundalk Institute of Technology is seeking to recruit a highly motivated, early-stage postdoctoral researcher to work on the Research Ireland funded Research Centre RINN AI. RINN AI is a multi-institutional national research centre for data science and artificial intelligence. The successful candidate will contribute to research within the Human-Centred AI Design theme, with a particular focus on the design, development and evaluation of AI-enabled digital health technologies. The research will explore how AI can be designed to enhance, rather than replace, human capabilities with particular consideration of the needs of older adults and people managing health conditions. Areas of research may include adaptive and personalised digital health systems, human-AI interaction, explainable and trustworthy AI, accessibility and inclusive design and approaches to supporting meaningful and sustained engagement with digital health technologies.

NetwellCASALA Research Centre The successful candidate will join the NetwellCASALA research centre - a well-established multidisciplinary research and development team based in Dundalk Institute of Technology working on applied, age-friendly digital health and wellbeing technology solutions to support older adults and those who care for them. The team at NetwellCASALA have extensive experience in HCI, digital health, healthy ageing, user-centred design and the development and evaluation of technologies to support health and wellbeing. NetwellCASALA works closely with members of the community, health services, industry and academic partners to actively translate ideas into practical solutions that improve the lives of older people and those who care for them, whilst also creating new business opportunities and informing public policies. Research staff within the centre are encouraged and supported in contributing to and writing research grants. Staff also have access to a wide array of training courses within DkIT to support career progression.

Role Reporting directly to the Director of NetwellCASALA, the recruited postdoctoral researcher will be responsible for the delivery of a targeted programme of research. The successful candidate will collaborate with academic, industry and clinical partners. They will be required to attend project meetings, contribute to project reports and deliverables for the funder and disseminate the research through academic publications and presentations.

The role includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • Conduct high-quality research at the intersection of HCI, AI, digital health and ageing.
  • Contribute to the design, development and evaluation of human-centred AI and digital health technologies.
  • Design and conduct user-centred research involving older adults, people living with chronic conditions, healthcare professionals and/or other relevant stakeholders.
  • Employ appropriate qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods research approaches.
  • Lead and support co-design, usability and user experience research activities.
  • Develop and/or contribute to the development of interactive prototypes and AI-enabled digital health applications.
  • Investigate approaches to personalisation, adaptation, explainability, accessibility, trust and human control within AI systems.
  • Analyse and interpret data arising from user studies and digital health technology use.
  • Contribute to the development of novel methods, frameworks and design recommendations for human-centred AI in digital health.
  • Lead / contribute to high quality reports and publications on the research programme and disseminate findings at national and international conferences.
  • Contribute to funding proposals and the development of new research opportunities.
  • Work collaboratively with researchers across RINN AI and with external community, healthcare, and industry partners.
  • Engage in appropriate training and development opportunities to develop own transferable skills, career and reputation.
  • Contribute to the supervision and mentoring of postgraduate research students.
  • Contribute to education and public engagement activities related to AI, digital health and responsible technology development.
  • Undertake any other related research activities as required.

Skills and Qualifications required A PhD completed or near completion in Human Computer Interaction, Computer Science, Digital Health or related field. Demonstrated research experience in HCI and user-centred technology design. Experience in designing and evaluating digital health applications and platforms. Knowledge or experience of AI, adaptive systems, explainable AI or AI-enabled interactive systems. Experience of conducting research with end-users, using qualitative, quantitative and mixed-methods approaches. Experience with user-centred design methodologies, including co-design, usability testing or related methodologies. Experience conducting digital health deployments and evaluations in the community. Technical experience relevant to the development or prototyping of interactive digital systems. A strong research publication record appropriate to career stage. Excellent communications skills, particularly in the area of research dissemination to broad audiences. Ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary research environment. Driven, outgoing, capable of networking and forming collaborations. Desirable Qualifications Research experience involving older adults, people living with chronic conditions, healthcare professionals. Experience specifically within the field of healthy ageing and technology. Experience designing or evaluating AI-enabled health or wellbeing technologies. Experience with accessibility, inclusive design / age-friendly design. Experience of collaborating with industry. A full, clean driving license for conducting community based research.

General Note Candidates will be shortlisted for interview based on information supplied. The qualifications for appointment and conditions of service for all posts are subject to the provisions of the Institutes of Technology Acts, 1992- 2006 and as amended. Canvassing will automatically disqualify. This position will be filled on a Temporary basis (18 months). The appointee will carry out the lawful instructions of the President and comply with the requirements and regulations of the Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science.

Salary Scale This position will be on Point 1 of the Postdoctoral Researcher PD1 salary scale (currently €47,273). The rate of remuneration may be adjusted from time to time in line with Government pay policy.
