Job summary

Bloomberg is seeking a Database Platform Engineer to own the Oracle-based data platform for DL+ workloads in Dublin. You will shape architecture, lifecycle, backup, and upgrades while coordinating with PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch/Solr specialists.

You will drive automation via IaC and CI/CD, build dashboards and guardrails, and partner with Linux, storage, network, security and application teams to improve reliability in production systems.

Qualifications

• Substantial hands-on experience operating Oracle databases in production environments.
• Strong Oracle architecture and lifecycle knowledge covering high availability, backup and recovery, patching, upgrades, capacity planning and performance.
• Ability to diagnose complex Oracle performance problems using diagnostics and system evidence, and explain findings clearly.
• Production experience with PostgreSQL or Elasticsearch/OpenSearch/Solr.
• Strong Linux fundamentals (RHEL) including storage, networking, I/O troubleshooting.
• Proficiency in Python or Bash with automation using Ansible or Terraform.
• Experience with Git-based change control, CI/CD, monitoring and documentation.
• Reliability mindset: incident response, RCA, recovery testing and cross-team communication.

Responsibilities

• Own the Oracle platform lifecycle - set standards for architecture, provisioning, configuration, patching, upgrades, capacity and decommissioning.
• Engineer for performance and scale - diagnose and resolve database performance issues across the stack with tuning and indexing.
• Build resilience and recoverability - operate backup, restore, replication, HA, failover and DR with RPO/RTO testing.
• Automate and enable self-service - use IaC and CI/CD to replace runbooks with safe provisioning workflows.
• Support adjacent data technologies - contribute to operation and standardisation of PostgreSQL and Elasticsearch/OpenSearch/Solr.
• Lead migrations and platform change - plan upgrades, schema moves, data movement and rollback plans.
• Instrument and secure the service - dashboards, alerts, baselines, SLOs, least privilege and encryption controls.
• Improve reliability - incident response, root-cause analysis and cross-team collaboration to reduce toil.
