• Naval Service Electrical/Electronic Engineer Officer

Engineer Officers are commissioned members of the Naval Service. Marine and Electrical/ Electronic Engineer Officers are an integral part of the support structure for the operation of the Naval Service.

Officers are the managers, decision makers and leaders of the Defence Forces. Electrical/ Electronic Engineer Officers are commissioned members of the Naval Service. Electrical/ Electronic Engineer Officers are an integral part of the support structure for the operation of the Naval Service. They carry out a variety of duties at sea and onshore. They ensure that the electrical and electronic systems for naval vessels are fully operational at all times. They manage and instruct technicians on board ships and ashore, oversee repairs and maintenance, and solve any problems that occur.

The Defence Forces is looking for people who have, in addition to the appropriate engineering qualifications.

Professional Requirements

A candidate for appointment as Electrical / Electronic Engineer Officer in the Naval Service must hold a third level Degree (Level 8) or equivalent qualification recognised for Corporate Membership of Engineers Ireland in one of the following subjects:

• Electronic Engineering
• Electrical Engineering

Age Requirements

Candidates must be under 30 years of age on the date deemed as the closing date for applications.

How to Join

Competitions for direct entry electrical/electronic engineer officers are advertised as required. Potential Candidates are required to complete an online application form through this website. The dates for the competition are advertised in the National Papers and on this website with applications only being accepted on these dates. All correspondence with applicants will be done through email for the duration of the competition.

Interview

Candidates who are deemed eligible will be asked to attend for Interview.

Medical & Security Clearance

The top scoring candidates at the Interview will then be called to attend a full medical examination in the Naval Base, Haulbowline, Cork. In conjunction with this all candidates will be security vetted by An Garda Siochana. Candidates will be required to pass both the medical examination and security vetting to be considered for induction.

Award of a Commission

The candidates who finished at the top of the competitions order of merit will then be offered a commission in the Defence Forces, as an Engineer Officer with the rank of Sub Lieutenant (NS).

Training

All newly commissioned Direct Entry Electrical/ Electronic Engineer Officers will be required to undergo a Military Induction course. This is followed by Initial Professional Development (IPD) which continues in general electrical/ electronic engineering before commencing further training in one of a number of specialised disciplines.

Unit Assignment

Naval Service Electrical / Electronic Engineer Officers will be assigned to either a ship or a to a shore appointment according to the needs of the Defence Forces. The Naval Service is based in Haulbowline, Co. Cork.
