Microbiology Laboratory Supervisor

We offer bespoke managed service solutions that give clients the option of having our expert team on-site at their own facility or outsourcing those services to us here at CLS.

The Role

We are seeking a Microbiology Lab Supervisor to lead the day-to-day operations of our microbiology laboratory. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising laboratory activities, managing resources, ensuring compliance with quality standards, and supporting the delivery of high-quality microbiological testing services. This role requires a strong technical background in microbiology, proven leadership experience, and the ability to drive performance, quality, and continuous improvement within a GMP laboratory environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Frontline management in the day-to-day supervision of all laboratory activities.
• Allocation, scheduling, and management of laboratory resources.
• Working as directed according to company safety policies and cGMP requirements.
• Performance management of direct reports, including development plans for all analysts.
• Ensuring that all quality systems within the department are adhered to daily, including GMP and ISO 17025 requirements.
• Development of new areas of testing, including sterility testing, and introducing improved workflows into the laboratory.
• Ensuring results and reports are delivered to clients on time and liaising with customers on support-related matters.
• Reviewing analyst documentation, data, laboratory investigation reports, deviations, and customer complaints.
• Performing routine microbial analysis as required.
• Developing and reviewing SOPs, TMs, TSs, and associated documentation to ensure compliance with USP, Ph. Eur., and ISO guidance documents.
• Preparation and validation of test reports.
• Preparation and technical approval of validation activities for new products and test methods.
• Ensuring staff training, equipment qualification/calibration, and method validation activities are adequate and up to date.
• Preparing the laboratory for internal and external audits while maintaining compliance with housekeeping and safety standards.
• Monthly reporting of trends and KPI management.
• Motivating staff to achieve targets and optimise the use of laboratory resources.
• Promoting team spirit, increased efficiency, and full engagement across the microbiology team.

Requirements

• A third-level degree in Microbiology or a related scientific discipline.
• Demonstrated leadership experience with responsibility for team development and engagement.
• Strong knowledge of GMP, ISO 17025, and microbiological testing requirements.
• Experience reviewing analytical data, investigations, deviations, and quality documentation.
• An appreciation of commercial business needs and the ability to balance operational priorities with customer expectations.
• Excellent attention to detail and a commitment to maintaining high-quality standards.
