Mechanical Design Engineer – Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Site
Role Overview
We are seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of mechanical building services and process-related infrastructure within a pharmaceutical manufacturing environment.
The successful candidate will be responsible for the design, engineering calculations and preparation of MEP documentation for systems including HVAC, medical gases, wastewater and associated mechanical services. The role will involve working closely with project, engineering, construction and client teams to deliver compliant and technically robust solutions within a live pharmaceutical environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and develop mechanical building services systems for pharmaceutical facilities and capital projects.
- Design and specification of:
- HVAC systems
- Heating and cooling systems
- Medical gas systems
- Wastewater and drainage services
- Mechanical pipework and associated services
- Undertake heating and cooling load calculations to establish system requirements.
- Carry out airflow and pressure-loss calculations for HVAC and ventilation systems.
- Undertake pipe sizing and hydraulic calculations for mechanical and medical gas systems.
- Calculate pump flow rates, system duties and pressure requirements.
- Undertake duct sizing and air distribution calculations.
- Develop mechanical system layouts and ensure designs are coordinated with other MEP disciplines.
- Prepare and update MEP drawings, including layouts, schematics, sections and details.
- Produce design documentation, calculations, schedules and technical specifications.
- Coordinate designs with architectural, structural, electrical, process and other engineering disciplines.
- Support the preparation of technical documentation for tender, procurement and construction.
- Provide technical support during construction, installation and commissioning activities.
- Liaise with contractors, vendors, client representatives and project teams to resolve technical queries and design issues.
- Work within a GMP and EHS-focused pharmaceutical environment, ensuring designs consider operational, safety, maintainability and compliance requirements.
Key Skills & Experience
- Degree or equivalent qualification in Mechanical Engineering / Building Services Engineering.
- Proven experience in mechanical design, ideally within pharmaceutical, life sciences, manufacturing or other highly regulated environments.
- Strong understanding of HVAC and mechanical building services.
- Experience with heating/cooling load calculations, airflow and pressure-loss calculations.
- Competent in pipework, ductwork and pump sizing calculations.
- Experience preparing and interpreting MEP drawings and technical documentation.
- Good understanding of mechanical services coordination within complex facilities.
- Experience using AutoCAD and/or Revit/BIM for mechanical design would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of relevant Irish/European mechanical, HVAC and building services standards.
- Strong attention to detail with the ability to produce accurate engineering calculations and design documentation.
- Good communication and coordination skills, with the ability to work effectively with multidisciplinary project teams.
