Overview

The Company

My Client is a courier company specialising in overnight freight services in Ireland & UK / European imports /exports. Their customers were mainly local businesses in and around Galway and private individuals. From day one they were committed to providing the best possible service and that meant complete reliability and consistency.

Today they have a diverse client base ranging from the Multinational Sector and government Bodies to SMEs whilst still retaining their strong links with indigenous Irish companies.

Role

The Managing Director will lead the company’s strategic direction and oversee daily operations, ensuring efficiency, profitability, and compliance. This role combines leadership and industry expertise to drive growth and maintain strong client relationships in a competitive transport and logistics market.

Responsibilities
  • Strategic Planning and Implementation: Developing and executing business strategies, setting goals, and ensuring alignment with the company's mission and vision. Knowledge of GDP and the GDP Champion accreditation would be advantageous.
  • Operational Management: Overseeing day-to-day operations, managing resources (including key personnel and assets) to ensure efficiency and effectiveness.
  • Financial Performance: Monitoring financial performance to P&L level, reviewing management accounts, and confirming weekly employee hours for the wages department.
  • Team Leadership: Leading and motivating teams, providing guidance and support to direct reports, and fostering a positive and productive work environment.
  • Stakeholder Management: Building and maintaining strong relationships with key stakeholders, including board members, clients, and partners.
  • Risk Management: Identifying and mitigating potential risks to the organisation, ensuring compliance with Health & Safety regulations, safeguarding the company's reputation, and overseeing facility and equipment upkeep and maintenance.
  • Innovation and Growth: Identifying opportunities for growth and innovation, staying abreast of market trends, and driving the company's competitive advantage.
  • Performance Monitoring and Reporting: Tracking progress against goals, analysing performance data, and reporting to the board of directors or other relevant stakeholders.
Requirements
  • Proven management track record in transport or logistics operations, preferably in an SME environment.
  • Experience managing budgets, forecasting, cash flow, and delivering sustainable margins.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to make timely, data-driven decisions under pressure.
  • Someone who will take ownership of the role. Flexible and responsive, with the ability to be available outside normal hours when necessary and within reason.
