Job summary

Global Medics is seeking a Locum Doctor (GP Specialist) to deliver primary medical and psychiatric care for prisoners in Ireland. The role includes managing substance misuse needs and liaising with health services to ensure comprehensive care.

Shifts span weekdays, weekends and bank holidays across multiple locations with a 9am-5pm rota (1 hour unpaid break). Induction starts with two shadowing shifts, paid at the full rate.

Responsibilities

• Medical assessment of new receptions and ongoing general medical care for prisoners, including drug and alcohol treatment.
• Liaising with IPS health policy and staff to ensure safe, effective care within the establishment.
• Carrying out preventative programmes and public health initiatives for prisoners.
• Monitoring treatment plans, referring for specialist opinion when required, and participating in clinical audits.

Job Description

The Prison Doctor will be responsible for the primary medical and psychiatric care and includes the substance misuse needs of all prisoners within the establishment. This will include; Medical assessment of all new receptions Ongoing general medical care of prisoners to include drug and alcohol treatment Preventative programmes to limit the progression of chronic diseases Facilitating nurse prescribing across the prison estate Prescribing a course of treatment and monitoring that treatment for its duration Referral for specialist opinion e.g. psychiatric assessment where appropriate, and liaising with other professionals involved in the overall therapeutic care and wellbeing of the prisoners Screening prisoners for relevant diseases Liaising with the National Infection Control Manager to reduce the transmission of communicable diseases Facilitating fitness to work assessments Ensuring the provision of appropriate public health and vaccination programmes to prisoners in line with current IPS health policy Medication management initiatives Participating in clinical audit and ensuring compliance with relevant protocols/standard operating procedures pertaining to the health care of prisoners To ensure that this work is undertaken, agreed targets with the ECL will form part of a regular review mechanism

Requirements

Must be actively working as a GP in Ireland or recent Irish GP experience IMC Specialist Registration desirable but not required Previous experience working in UK/Irish prison service desirable however, will consider GPs with previous experience working in addiction and/or An Garda Síochána services. Compliance: must meet HSE compliance standards including both Agency Garda Vetting and IPS Garda Vetting clearance.
