Team/Role Overview

The Legal Senior Group Manager is a senior management-level position responsible for accomplishing results through the management of a team or department to manage and direct day-to-day legal activities in coordination with the Legal team. The overall objective of this role is to provide legal support, advice, and guidance across a broad range of practice areas, with respect to the local laws and regulations of the country or countries for which the role is responsible.

This role leads a team of lawyers providing guidance, support, and legal advice on Citi\'s businesses and functions in Ireland and Europe for Citibank Europe PLC (CEP) and in Ireland for the Citi franchise generally. This role requires thorough understanding of the strategic direction of the Business, combined with a solid conceptual / practical grounding in the laws and regulations for the geographies in which we operate. Provides input into strategic decisions, exercising sound legal judgement to develop proactive, practical, and artful business-oriented solutions. Full management responsibility of a team, including management of people, budget, and planning.

What you’ll do
  • Provide legal counsel to CEP senior management, control functions and businesses on legal, regulatory and franchise matters associated with Citi’s activities in the countries covered; ensure CEP addresses legal, regulatory and franchise risks; consult with Regional Country Counsel as appropriate; and to the Citi Country Cluster Head, Citi Country Officer.
  • Support the General Counsel in advising the Executive Committee and the Board and their sub-committees, as well as Country committees, on matters of legal and regulatory risk.
  • Support strategic initiatives of the businesses and functions in covered countries by providing subject matter expertise and interpretations of relevant laws, rules, regulations, and industry practices, and advising business management/leadership on legal matters impacting the business.
  • Manage a team by providing guidance, evaluating employee performance, and providing recommendations for pay increases, promotions, terminations, and personnel-related matters, as applicable.
  • Drive the provision of internal and external legal support to Citi’s local businesses in Ireland, working closely with the relevant Regional General Counsel to ensure legal needs are met in a cost-effective manner.
  • Develop a broad understanding of Citi’s businesses in Ireland and across Europe and of major legal and regulatory risks facing those businesses and/or the Citi franchise.
  • Ensure business decisions are made with legal guidance; apply institutional knowledge against industry standard practices, laws, rules, and regulatory guidelines; identify when to escalate when necessary.
  • Drive collaboration across internal lines of business and control/support functions to achieve coordinated and efficient outcomes, coordinating with other legal team members as appropriate.
  • Advise (or arrange for the provision of) legal advice to business management on legal and regulatory risks affecting Citi’s businesses in Europe and Ireland, as well as franchise and reputational risks.
  • Provide legal advice to CEP and the Ireland franchise and country management to maintain good relations with local regulators and regulatory bodies relevant to Citi business activities.
  • Monitor key legal and regulatory developments that may impact Citi’s businesses and apprise country management of significant developments.
  • Take an active role in CEP or country-level governance committees and act as a lawyer supporting the country in any matter.
  • Manage day-to-day legal activities as a subject matter expert and provide senior advisory services to business partners.
  • Assess risk in business decisions, safeguarding Citi’s reputation and assets by driving compliance with laws and regulations, adhering to policies, and escalating and reporting control issues with transparency; supervise others and promote accountability for standards.
What we’ll need from you
  • Specific relevant industry experience with some experience in an in-house legal role in financial services; managerial experience.
  • Excellent leadership, interpersonal, organizational and relationship management skills.
  • Excellent command of local languages.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple assignments in a demanding, fast-paced environment.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of international, multi-jurisdictional laws and practices; stay updated on regulatory and legal environment, internal policies and industry trends.
  • Effective communication and negotiation skills and ability to build and maintain trusted relationships.
  • Bar license in good standing to practice law – preferably in Ireland.
