Job summary

Optum seeks a Lead Technical Product Manager to shape a portfolio of products across OPEN, aligning strategy, discovery, and delivery with business outcomes. You will guide multiple teams, balance dependencies, and translate complex needs into actionable plans.

You will lead, coach and grow TPMs, strengthen backlog quality, and build a high-performing product practice while ensuring alignment with technical and regulatory standards.

Our Lead Technical Product Manager / Product Leader is responsible for shaping and leading a suite of products across OPEN, ensuring product strategy, discovery, roadmap direction and delivery execution are aligned to business outcomes. This role operates across multiple products, teams and stakeholder groups, bringing clarity to priorities, managing dependencies across a highly matrixed organization, and translating complex business, data and technology needs into actionable product plans. The role will also provide leadership, coaching and day-to-day guidance to other Technical Product Managers, helping mature product practices, strengthen backlog quality and build a high-performing product management capability across the portfolio.

What You Will Do
  • Own and evolve the technical product strategy, roadmap and delivery priorities for a suite of related products, balancing business value, technical feasibility, operational risk and customer impact
  • Create and maintain integrated product roadmaps that show sequencing, dependencies, milestones and value delivery across multiple products and teams
  • Lead portfolio-level backlog management, ensuring work is appropriately triaged, prioritized, refined and aligned to strategic outcomes
  • Partner with business stakeholders, engineering, architecture, design, analytics and delivery leaders to shape product direction and resolve trade-offs across the portfolio
  • Provide product leadership across multiple scrum teams, ensuring sprint goals and delivery plans connect back to product outcomes and roadmap commitments
Product Leadership and Portfolio Management
  • Own and evolve the technical product strategy, roadmap and delivery priorities for a suite of related products, balancing business value, technical feasibility, operational risk and customer impact
  • Create and maintain integrated product roadmaps that show sequencing, dependencies, milestones and value delivery across multiple products and teams

Technical And Strategic Product Expertise
  • Manage intake for technological advancements, emerging product practices, AI-enabled delivery approaches and industry trends to inform product strategy and future investment decisions
  • Champion the responsible use of AI in product discovery, backlog refinement, analysis, prototyping, delivery planning and operational workflows, ensuring AI is used to accelerate outcomes while maintaining appropriate human oversight
  • Help mature the product development lifecycle through thoughtful adoption of agentic AI, improving how teams discover, refine, validate, deliver and operate products
  • Understand complex technical, data, architecture and integration issues and facilitate decision-making across product, engineering and business stakeholders
  • Ensure the product suite adheres to technical, security, compliance, privacy and regulatory standards, while balancing delivery timelines and business value
  • Use technical fluency to challenge assumptions, shape solution options, manage dependencies and ensure products are built in a scalable, reusable and sustainable way
Data, Analytics And Domain Fluency
  • Develop and maintain solid understanding of the business data domain, key entities, metrics, analytical logic and product data flows across the suite of products
  • Partner with Business Analysts, Data Analysts, Engineering and Architecture to validate data models, definitions and assumptions before delivery commitments are made
  • Ensure analytical logic and data definitions are reviewed, governed and reusable across products where appropriate, reducing duplication and improving consistency
  • Use understanding of end-to-end data flow to support prioritization, sequencing, dependency management and trade-off decisions across product teams
Product Discovery And Incubation
  • Lead discovery across new product opportunities, enhancements and cross-product initiatives, bringing together business, engineering, architecture, design and analytics partners to frame problems and solution options
  • Use notebooks as data discovery prototype artefacts, alongside proof-of-concept spikes, API contract mockups, query prototypes, sample dashboards and other discovery techniques to validate assumptions before work enters delivery
  • Convert discovery outcomes into well-structured features and backlog items so delivery teams have clear, feasible and value-aligned work ready for planning
Stakeholder Engagement And Executive Communication
  • Act as the principal product interface between OPEN Technology and business stakeholders for a suite of products, ensuring priorities, risks and trade-offs are clearly understood
  • Build trusted relationships with senior business, technology, engineering, architecture, design and analytics partners to shape strategy and drive alignment
  • Communicate roadmap progress, delivery confidence, risks, dependencies and key decisions in a clear, executive-ready manner
  • Facilitate difficult prioritization and scope conversations, including pushback where requests create delivery risk or distract from committed outcomes
Leadership, Mentoring And Product Practice Development
  • Lead, mentor and coach other Technical Product Managers, supporting their growth in discovery, backlog management, stakeholder engagement, delivery control and executive communication
  • Set clear expectations for product quality, backlog health, roadmap discipline and delivery readiness across the TPM team
  • Create consistency in product practices, including intake, triage, prioritization, refinement, release planning and product performance reporting
  • Support resource planning, work allocation and capability development across TPMs, helping build a solid leadership pipeline for future product growth
Risk Management, Quality And Delivery Governance
  • Identify and manage risks, dependencies and delivery constraints across multiple products and teams
  • Ensure quality, testing, compliance, security and operational readiness expectations are integrated into product planning and delivery
  • Oversee resolution of technical, operational and customer-facing issues that impact the product suite, ensuring appropriate visibility and escalation
  • Use product performance, operational data and stakeholder feedback to drive continuous improvement and inform future roadmap decisions

What You Will Bring
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Business, Product Management, Engineering, Data Analytics, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
  • Proven significant experience in technical product management, product leadership, or related technology delivery roles, with demonstrated ownership of multiple products, a product suite, or a complex product domain
  • Proven ability to lead product strategy, roadmap planning, backlog prioritization, and delivery execution across multiple teams and stakeholder groups
  • Proven experience mentoring, coaching, or managing Technical Product Managers or similar product and delivery professionals, with a focus on capability development and team effectiveness
  • Proven experience utilizing notebooks, query prototypes, dashboards, or similar analytical artifacts to support data discovery, product validation, and delivery readiness
  • Demonstrated working knowledge of AI-enabled product workflows and the application of agentic AI to support discovery, refinement, delivery readiness, and product operations
  • Demonstrated solid communication, negotiation, stakeholder management, and executive presentation skills, with the ability to influence decisions within highly matrixed environments
  • Demonstrated solid understanding of Agile methodologies, product discovery, product lifecycle management, delivery governance, and modern software development practices
  • Proven ability to analyze complex business, data, and technical information and make informed prioritization and trade-off decisions
  • Proven experience working with engineering, architecture, data, design, compliance, security, and business teams to deliver scalable, reliable, and valuable products
  • Demonstrated ability to manage risk, dependencies, quality expectations, and delivery commitments across a portfolio or suite of products
