We welcome applications from recent graduates. Prior full-time engineering experience is not required.
About EMR:
EMR Integrated Solutions provides communications, SCADA and instrumentation solutions to sectors including water and power utilities, renewable energy, broadcasting, public safety and commercial industry. Our communications team designs, configures, deploys and supports secure operational networks that connect remote sites, control systems and monitoring platforms.
The opportunity:
This is an entry-level role for a recent graduate who wants to build a career in industrial telecommunications and networking. You will apply the networking knowledge gained through your degree while developing practical experience with routers, switches, firewalls, cellular communications, VPNs, monitoring systems and site commissioning. You will work with experienced engineers and follow established designs, procedures and change controls, with increasing responsibility as your competence develops.
Key responsibilities:
- Assist with the preparation, configuration and testing of routers, Ethernet switches, firewalls, cellular routers and other communications equipment using approved templates and procedures.
- Support the deployment and commissioning of operational networks at utility, renewable-energy and industrial sites, including LAN, WAN, Wi-Fi, cellular and secure remote-access solutions.
- Configure and verify basic IP settings such as IPv4 addressing, subnet masks, default gateways, VLANs, DHCP, DNS, NAT, access rules and static routes under engineering supervision.
- Help activate and verify cellular connectivity, including SIM allocation, APN profiles, signal quality and service stability.
- Support firewall, port-forwarding and VPN configuration in accordance with approved designs and security requirements; do not make uncontrolled changes to live systems.
- Register devices in network-monitoring platforms, respond to alerts and carry out first-line fault investigation using structured troubleshooting methods.
- Use tools such as ping, traceroute, packet capture, device logs and monitoring data to investigate connectivity and performance issues, escalating when required.
- Assist with bench testing, factory acceptance testing, site acceptance testing and handover, recording evidence and confirming that agreed traffic flows operate correctly.
- Prepare and maintain clear technical records, including configuration backups, IP address schedules, network diagrams, test sheets, site photographs and commissioning reports.
- Work with project managers and senior engineers to gather site information and complete assigned project tasks.
- Follow EMR health and safety, cybersecurity, quality, incident-management and change-control procedures at all times.
- Participate in training and product familiarisation, building capability across EMR's communications technologies and customer environments.
Education and essential knowledge:
- A recent NFQ Level 7 or Level 8 qualification in networking, telecommunications, computer engineering, information technology, electronic engineering or a closely related discipline.
- A sound academic and practical foundation in TCP/IP networking, IPv4 addressing and subnetting, Ethernet switching, VLANs and routing fundamentals.
- An understanding of common network services and security concepts, including DHCP, DNS, NAT, ACLs, firewalls, VPNs and the principle of least privilege.
- Basic familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems and confidence using command-line diagnostic tools.
- The ability to follow a technical procedure carefully, record configuration changes accurately and ask for guidance when a task is outside your current competence.
- A practical problem-solving approach, good attention to detail and clear written and verbal communication.
- A collaborative attitude and willingness to learn from experienced colleagues, customers and technology partners.
- A full driving licence, or the ability to meet the travel requirements of the role within an agreed timeframe, as travel to customer sites is required.
Desirable knowledge and experience
Any of the following would be useful but is not required:
- A college work placement, final-year project, laboratory work or personal project involving network configuration, cybersecurity, IoT or systems administration.
- Exposure to Fortinet or comparable routing, switching and firewall platforms.
- Familiarity with packet-analysis tools.
- Basic scripting or programming experience, particularly Python, PowerShell or shell scripting.
- Awareness of wireless, cellular, radio, industrial or operational technology networks.
- Familiarity with network monitoring, virtualisation, cloud networking or Git-based version control.
- What you will develop
- Practical configuration and troubleshooting skills across secure operational networks.
- Experience of cellular routers, industrial firewalls, remote-access solutions and network monitoring.
- An understanding of how IT networking principles are applied safely in live utility and industrial environments.
- Progression toward independently delivering defined work packages once trained and authorised.
Working arrangements:
- Full-time role within EMR's Communications Engineering Team.
- A mix of office, workshop, remote-support and customer-site work.
- Travel within Ireland and, where required, occasional travel to customer locations elsewhere.
- Site work will be planned and completed in accordance with EMR safety procedures and any customer-specific requirements.
Candidate profile
The successful candidate will be curious, dependable and comfortable combining hands-on equipment work with careful technical documentation. We are looking for strong networking fundamentals and learning potential rather than an established senior engineer. You should be willing to take ownership of assigned tasks while recognising when to seek support or escalat a risk.
