Job Description:

Job Title: Enhanced Staff Nurse (ICU)

Department: Intensive Care Unit

Reports to: ICU Nurse Manager

Overall Purpose of Job: Provide professional nursing skills in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating the nursing care for assigned patients while providing exceptional patient care in an environment where quality, respect, caring and compassion are at the center of all we do.

Key Responsibilities and Deliverables:

  1. Willingness to champion and promote the advancement of technology to enhance the organisation of nursing and delivery of patient care.
  2. Act as a "Link Nurse" where required, including report writing, data collection, meeting attendance, peer support, and training.
  3. Lead/participate in unit-specific and hospital-wide quality improvement projects.
  4. Collect, input, and analyze data for quality improvement projects as designated.
  5. Pursue relevant education and training to enhance scope of practice.
  6. Promote and support new services and developments tailored to business requirements.
  7. Deputise for CNM 2 / Clinical Co-Ordinator on a short-term basis when required.

Clinical Responsibilities:

  1. Provide physical and psychological care to Beacon Patients.
  2. Monitor and promote high standards of nursing care and documentation.
  3. Demonstrate proficient specialist skills and knowledge in ICU clinical practice.
  4. Use all equipment for critically ill patients and explain their use to junior staff.
  5. Work within professional guidelines as laid down by NMBI Code of Conduct for Nurses.
  6. Carry out all nursing practice in accordance with Beacon Hospital Policies.
  7. Foster a learning environment for staff development.
  8. Support and assist less experienced staff in developing their nursing skills.
  9. Participate in Clinical Governance / Clinical Risk Management in ICU.

Managerial Responsibilities:

  1. Deputise for the CNM2/Clinical Coordinator in their absence.
  2. Report incidents for Quality Management.
  3. Monitor and supervise the safe maintenance of equipment.
  4. Participate in the Joint Commissioning accreditation (JCI) process.
  5. Act as a resource within ICU to provide senior nursing support.
  6. Promote effective inter-professional teamwork.

Personal & Professional Responsibilities:

  1. Act as a proficient practitioner and effective role model.
  2. Participate in staff orientation and educational programmes.
  3. Maintain and update own knowledge continuously.
  4. Participate in individual performance reviews annually.
  5. Discuss any problems or potential problems with the Clinical Coordinator.

Educational Responsibilities:

  1. Keep up to date with mandatory training.
  2. Participate in quality and audit programmes.
  3. Act as the named preceptor to new staff / Student Nurses.
  4. Complete additional Enhanced Staff Nurse ICU competencies as required.
  5. Identify and pursue own educational and professional development.

Qualifications:

  1. NMBI Registered General Nurse Registration - Essential
  2. Bachelor of Science in Nursing - Essential
  3. Post Graduate Qualification in Critical Care - Desirable

Experience:

  1. Minimum of 5 years Cardiothoracic or Surgical ICU experience.
  2. Evidence of positive contribution to intensive care.
  3. Preceptor to adult critical care course student.

Job Specific Competencies and Knowledge:

  1. Proven clinical and professional managerial ability.
  2. Desirable: teaching and assessing course, basic IT skills, and experience in presentation skills.
  3. Strong commitment to pre and post-registration nurse education.
  4. Demonstrate the practice of teaching in the clinical area.
  5. Evidence of continuing professional development.
  6. Caring manner towards patients, visitors, and colleagues.
  7. Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  8. Able to form good inter-personal relationships with all staff members.
  9. Competent teacher of critical care skills and practices.
  10. Evidence of continued personal learning.
  11. Professionally assertive, approachable, and enthusiastic.
