The role ensures that critical process instrumentation is calibrated, maintained, and documented in compliance with GMP, regulatory, quality, safety, and site standards. The technician will also provide supporting electrical maintenance, fault-finding, and troubleshooting services to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient facility operations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute scheduled, corrective, and post-maintenance calibration of process instrumentation, including pressure, temperature, flow, level, analytical instruments, control valves, and weighing systems.
  • Perform all calibration activities in accordance with approved SOPs, equipment specifications, GMP requirements, and site quality standards.
  • Maintain complete and accurate calibration records, certificates, test data, equipment histories, and status information within the site CMMS or calibration management system.
  • Assess calibration results against defined tolerances and promptly escalate or investigate out-of-tolerance conditions.
  • Support deviations, non-conformances, CAPA activities, impact assessments, and root cause investigations associated with calibration or instrumentation failures.
  • Support calibration planning and scheduling to ensure work is completed within approved compliance windows and overdue calibrations are prevented.
  • Perform instrument loop checks, I/O verification, functional testing, commissioning support, and return-to-service checks following maintenance or project work.
  • Configure, verify, and troubleshoot smart instrumentation using HART communicators, documenting process calibrators, and other specialist test equipment.
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation, control-system, and electrical faults in a timely manner to minimise production downtime and restore equipment safely.
  • Carry out preventive and corrective maintenance on electrical systems, motors, MCCs, control panels, field devices, and associated control circuits.
  • Collaborate with Manufacturing, Engineering, Validation, Quality, and other maintenance personnel to improve equipment reliability, calibration performance, and process efficiency.
  • Use approved standards and test equipment with valid traceability and ensure calibration tools remain within their own certification periods.
  • Schedule, complete, close, and where appropriate assign work orders in a timely manner, recording work performed, parts used, test results, and equipment condition.
  • Comply with all safety procedures, permit requirements, lockout/tagout controls, cleanroom practices, and regulatory expectations.
  • Participate in training and continuous professional development relating to calibration, metrology, electrical systems, automation, and new technologies.

Qualifications And Experience

  • Time-served engineering technical qualification, Level 6 SOLAS Advanced Craft Certificate, technical degree or diploma, or equivalent.
  • Minimum of three years of electrical and instrumentation maintenance experience, preferably within a pharmaceutical, biopharmaceutical, medical-device, or similarly regulated environment.
  • Demonstrated hands-on experience in instrumentation calibration within a GMP-regulated facility.
  • Practical experience calibrating temperature, pressure, flow, level, conductivity, pH, weighing, analytical, and control-valve instrumentation.
  • Experience using calibration or maintenance management systems such as Beamex, Fluke MET/TEAM, SAP PM, Maximo, or another CMMS.
  • Strong understanding of calibration principles, accuracy, tolerance, measurement uncertainty, traceability, and out-of-tolerance assessment.
  • Knowledge of relevant calibration and quality standards, including ISO/IEC 17025 principles and GMP data-integrity expectations.
  • Experience using multifunction/documenting process calibrators, pressure sources, temperature baths or dry-blocks, electrical test equipment, and HART communicators.
  • Ability to read and interpret P&IDs, loop drawings, electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, instrument data sheets, and manufacturer manuals.
  • Knowledge of PLC, DCS, SCADA, and field-control systems, including I/O verification and basic control-loop troubleshooting.
  • Competence in electrical fault finding using appropriate diagnostic tools and safe systems of work.

Key Technical Skills

  • Instrument calibration, verification, and functional testing
  • Calibration scheduling, compliance tracking, and audit readiness
  • GMP documentation, data integrity, and controlled records
  • Out-of-tolerance assessment, deviation support, and root cause analysis
  • HART and smart instrumentation configuration
  • PLC/DCS I/O verification and control-loop checking
  • Commissioning, loop checks, and return-to-service testing
  • CMMS and calibration-management system use
  • Electrical troubleshooting and preventive maintenance

Core Competencies

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a multidisciplinary team.
  • Strong attention to detail, organisation, prioritisation, and commitment to accurate documentation.
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the organisation.
  • Sound judgement and decision-making, particularly when assessing compliance, safety, equipment status, and production impact.
  • Ability to manage multiple complex priorities and respond effectively to breakdowns or urgent maintenance needs.
  • Computer literacy and confidence using electronic maintenance, calibration, and quality systems.
  • Ability to interface effectively with electrical, mechanical, calibration, and construction contractors.

Additional Requirements

  • Flexibility to work occasional weekends, holidays, or off-hours to support planned maintenance, calibration activities, or emergencies.
  • The role is initially a day position of approximately 39 hours per week; there may be a future requirement to transition to shift work.
  • Ability to lift and carry equipment and work in confined or controlled environments where required.
