Job summary

Arup is seeking a Work Placement Geotechnical Engineer to join the Ground Engineering team across Cork, Dublin or Limerick. You will contribute to desk studies, ground investigations planning, and geotechnical design on diverse projects in Ireland and beyond.

You will work with a specialist team, developing skills in geological assessments, reporting, and collaboration with regulators, clients and contractors to deliver sustainable outcomes.

Qualifications

  • Working toward undergraduate or master's degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnics, or related discipline.
  • Interest in sustainable ground engineering and geotechnical risks.
  • Ability to collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Assist with geological, hydrogeological, and geotechnical desk studies and site assessments.
  • Support planning and interpretation of ground investigations including drilling and logging.
  • Contribute to geotechnical design for slopes, foundations, and ground improvement.
  • Prepare technical reports and environmental documentation for projects.
  • Engage with project meetings and communicate with partners, regulators and clients.
  • Support EIA input and assessment of ground-related impacts.

The Opportunity

We are currently seeking a Work Placement Geotechnical Engineer to join our specialist Ground Engineering team in Cork, Dublin, or Limerick, Ireland. The team provides geotechnical input to a portfolio of exciting, varied and multidisciplinary projects across Ireland and internationally. Our work spans major infrastructure, energy, water, environmental and development projects, with a strong focus on understanding ground and groundwater conditions and managing ground-related risks

During your work placement at Arup, you will work alongside a team on tasks such as:

  • Geological, hydrogeological and geotechnical desk studies, site assessments and development of conceptual ground models.
  • Planning and interpretation of ground investigations, including drilling, trial pitting, rock coring, geological logging, in situ testing and groundwater monitoring.
  • Geotechnical design for a range of projects, including slope stability analysis, foundation, retaining walls, and ground improvement
  • Geological and geotechnical assessments supporting infrastructure, environmental and development projects, including earthworks, slopes, excavations and rock engineering.
  • Preparation of technical reports, factual and interpretative ground investigation reports, hydrogeological assessments and environmental documentation.
  • Geotechnical input to Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs), Environmental Statements and regulatory submissions.
  • Assessment of potential impacts of developments on ground conditions, groundwater resources and groundwater-dependent receptors, including identification of mitigation measures.
  • Working closely with specialists from other disciplines to develop integrated and sustainable engineering solutions.
  • Attending project meetings and communicating with colleagues, project partners, contractors, regulators and clients
