Job summary

Mahony Fleet is seeking a Financial Controller to lead the Accounts Department in our Dublin operations. You will drive robust financial control, deliver monthly management accounts, manage cashflow and oversee VAT, tax and statutory compliance while guiding a high-performing finance team.

You will own credit risk governance, develop controls and KPIs, participate in budgeting and forecasting, and report insights to support growth and governance across the business.

Qualifications

  • Qualified Accountant with professional accounting designation (ACA/ACCA/CIMA) required.
  • 5–10 years of finance and accounting experience.
  • Experience as Financial Controller or senior finance leader in SME/mid-sized business.

Responsibilities

  • Lead day-to-day management of the Accounts Department.
  • Manage and develop the finance team, setting expectations and performance standards.
  • Ownership of Credit Risk, Credit Policy and Customer Financial Assessment across the leasing portfolio.
  • Ensure timely month-end and year-end close processes.
  • Oversee accounts receivable, accounts payable, credit control and cash management.
  • Develop and maintain strong financial controls, policies and procedures.
  • Drive continuous improvement across finance processes and workflows.
  • Implement KPIs and performance metrics for the finance function.
  • Work with Operations Director to support business improvement initiatives.
  • Challenge poor performance and foster accountability and excellence.
  • Prepare and deliver monthly management accounts.
  • Support annual budgeting and forecasting processes.
  • Monitor cashflow and working capital performance.
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support decision-making.
  • Manage banking relationships and treasury activities.
  • Oversee VAT, tax and statutory compliance obligations.
  • Coordinate external audits and year-end reporting.
  • Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are completed and reviewed.

Role Overview

The Financial Controller is responsible for leading and managing the finance function, ensuring robust financial control, accurate reporting, effective cashflow management, and a high-performing accounts team. The role will drive continuous improvement across finance processes, systems and controls while maintaining ownership of the Company's credit policy, including customer credit assessment, risk management and ongoing monitoring of customer credit performance. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting the Company's continued growth by delivering financial discipline, operational excellence and strong governance across all finance activities.

Key Roles and Responsibilities
1.Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead the day-to-day management of the Accounts Department.
  • Manage and develop the finance team, setting clear expectations and performance standards.
  • Ownership of Credit Risk, Credit Policy and Customer Financial Assessment across the Company's leasing portfolio

  • Support annual budgeting and periodic forecasting processes.
  • Monitor cashflow and working capital performance.
  • Provide financial analysis and insights to support decision-making.
  • Manage banking relationships and treasury activities.
  • Oversee VAT, tax and statutory compliance obligations.
  • Coordinate external audit requirements and year-end reporting.
  • Ensure balance sheet reconciliations are completed and reviewed regularly.
3.Credit Policy Ownership & Governance
  • Act as the owner and custodian of the Company's Credit Policy and credit governance framework
  • Assess, review and approve customer credit applications within delegated authority limits.
  • Develop and maintain robust credit assessment procedures for customers.
  • Monitor customer creditworthiness, payment performance and overall exposure on an ongoing basis.
  • Maintain appropriate credit limits and approval controls across the customer portfolio.
  • Conduct regular reviews of high-risk accounts and recommend appropriate risk mitigation measures.
  • Produce regular reports on debtor performance, credit exposure, aged debt and risk concentrations.
4. Process, Systems & Controls
  • Review and improve existing finance processes to ensure scalability.
  • Identify opportunities for automation and system enhancements.
  • Strengthen internal controls and governance frameworks.
  • Ensure finance systems are fully utilised and reporting is reliable.
  • Establish documented procedures and standard operating practices.
5. Customer Accounts & Credit Control
  • Oversee invoicing, collections and customer account management.
  • Reduce aged debt and improve debtor day performance.
  • Ensure customer account queries are resolved professionally and promptly.
  • Develop and monitor credit control policies and procedures.
  • Mentor, coach and develop team members.
  • Conduct performance reviews and development planning.
  • Identify capability gaps and training requirements.
  • Build a culture focused on accuracy, ownership and continuous improvement.
Qualifications & Skills
  • Qualified Accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent).
  • Minimum 5-10 years relevant finance and accounting experience.
  • Previous Financial Controller, Senior Finance Manager or similar leadership experience.
  • Experience improving finance processes within a growing SME or mid-sized business.
  • Strong knowledge of financial controls, reporting and compliance
  • Experience leading and managing finance teams.
