Job summary

Designer Group is seeking an Intermediate Electrical Engineer (HV) to support high‑voltage infrastructure projects from design through commissioning and handover. You will work under Senior Engineers to deliver HV systems across Ireland and Europe, collaborating with multidisciplinary teams on substations, transformers and switchgear.

The role offers exposure to tender inputs, design reviews, FAT/SAT activities and hands-on commissioning.

Qualifications

• Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.
• 2-5 years' experience in electrical engineering within power, utilities, industrial, renewable energy, pharmaceutical, commercial or data centre environments.

Responsibilities

• Assist in engineering and coordination of HV electrical infrastructure including substations, transformers, switchgear and distribution systems.
• Support preparation of technical inputs for tenders and project proposals.
• Assist with development and review of HV electrical designs in coordination with other teams.
• Ensure designs and installations comply with standards and client specifications.
• Support QA/QC, FAT/SAT, commissioning and energisation activities.

About Designer Group

Designer Group is a leading international mechanical, electrical and instrumentation contractor delivering complex projects across Data Centres, Life Sciences, Industrial, Power Generation, Energy and Commercial sectors. Due to continued growth within our Engineering Division, we are seeking an Intermediate Electrical Engineer (HV) to support the delivery of high‑voltage infrastructure projects from design through to commissioning and handover.

This is an excellent opportunity for an ambitious engineer looking to develop their expertise in HV systems while working alongside experienced engineering and project delivery teams on major projects across Ireland and Europe.

Role Purpose

Support the engineering, design, installation and commissioning of high‑voltage electrical systems across a range of projects. Working under the guidance of Senior Engineers and Engineering Managers, you will assist in the delivery of HV infrastructure from concept and detailed design through construction, testing, energisation and final handover.

Key Responsibilities

• Assist in the engineering and coordination of HV electrical infrastructure, including substations, transformers, switchgear and associated transmission and distribution systems.
• Support the preparation of technical inputs for tenders and project proposals.
• Assist with the development and review of HV electrical designs in coordination with Civil, Structural, Architectural, BIM and EHS teams.
• Ensure designs and installations comply with relevant standards, client specifications and statutory requirements.
• Support the coordination of in‑house engineering teams and external design consultants.
• Assist in the preparation of procurement specifications and technical evaluations.
• Review technical submittals and vendor documentation.
• Support equipment factory acceptance testing (FAT), site acceptance testing (SAT), commissioning and energisation activities.
• Participate in site inspections, QA/QC processes, ITP reviews and handover activities.
• Assist with the development of operating and maintenance documentation.
• Support project teams during construction and commissioning phases.
• Contribute to engineering calculations, reports, technical studies and design reviews.
• Participate in lessons learned exercises and continuous improvement initiatives.
• Maintain a strong focus on health, safety and quality throughout all project stages.

• Degree in Electrical Engineering or related discipline.

• 2-5 years' experience in electrical engineering within power, utilities, industrial, renewable energy, pharmaceutical, commercial or data centre environments.
• Strong understanding of electrical power systems and HV infrastructure.
• Experience supporting the design, installation or commissioning of HV electrical systems.
• Knowledge of switchgear, transformers, protection systems, earthing and electrical distribution networks.
• Familiarity with MV/HV voltage ranges typically from 10kV upwards.
• Safety-focused with strong attention to detail.
• Good communication and stakeholder engagement skills.
• Ability to work effectively within multidisciplinary project teams.
• Strong problem-solving and analytical capabilities.

Desirable Experience

Experience in one or more of the following areas would be advantageous:

• Grid connections and utility interfaces.
• HV cable systems.
• Power system studies and electrical calculations.
• HV primary plant and substation design.
• Protection and control systems.
• SCADA and automation systems.
• Earthing and lightning protection design.
• Electrical testing and commissioning.
• Renewable energy projects including wind, solar and BESS.
• Data centre, pharmaceutical, industrial or power generation projects.
• Knowledge of ETAP, DigSILENT, Amtech, Trimble, Revit or equivalent engineering software.
• Familiarity with IEC, EN, BS and IEEE standards.
