Job Title: Consultant in Emergency Medicine
Location: Public Hospital, Ireland
Job Type: Full-time, Temporary
Salary: In line with HSE Consultant Contract (Type B) – €226,000 to €269,000 per annum (depending on experience)
Job Summary:
We are seeking an experienced and dynamic Consultant in Emergency Medicine to join our multidisciplinary team within the public healthcare system in Ireland. The successful candidate will provide expert clinical leadership in the delivery of high-quality emergency care to a diverse patient population, while supporting the development and continuous improvement of emergency services within the hospital.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide consultant-level care in Emergency Medicine, including triage, diagnosis, treatment, and referral of acute and urgent medical conditions.
Lead and supervise the Emergency Department (ED) clinical team including registrars, SHOs, nurses, and allied health professionals.
Ensure timely, patient-centered care in compliance with HSE and hospital policies.
Participate in the development and implementation of ED protocols and clinical pathways.
Contribute to quality improvement initiatives, audit activities, and risk management strategies.
Take part in on-call duties and rota management as per departmental needs.
Provide teaching, training, and mentoring for junior doctors, medical students, and ED staff.
Engage in continuing professional development and contribute to academic or research activities as appropriate.
Collaborate with hospital departments, pre-hospital services, and community care teams to ensure integrated patient care.
Requirements:
Specialist Registration with the Irish Medical Council in the specialty of Emergency Medicine.
Eligible for appointment as per the HSE Consultant Contract 2023 (Type B or C, depending on site).
A minimum of 7 years postgraduate experience, including significant time spent in Emergency Medicine.
Demonstrated clinical leadership and team management skills.
Proven ability to work in a fast-paced, high-pressure environment.
Strong commitment to patient safety, clinical governance, and continuous improvement.
Desirable:
Fellowship of the Royal College of Emergency Medicine (FRCEM) or equivalent.
Experience in trauma, paediatric emergency care, or emergency ultrasound.
Involvement in clinical education or research.
