Job Description:

Ability West provides a wide range of high-quality services to children and adults with intellectual disabilities and autism across Galway City and County. Services include day services, residential care, short breaks, community support, rehabilitative training, and multi-disciplinary support. Overview of Role

  • The Person in Charge (PIC) is responsible for the effective provision and operation of services to adults within a designated Ability West service, including residential and short break respite services.
  • Ensure compliance with organisational policies, procedures, national legislation including the Health Act 2007, and HIQA regulations.
  • The role includes duties of the Person in Charge for the designated centre.
  • Manage and monitor the annual budget, including staffing and expenditure, ensuring operation within approved budgets.

Purpose of Role

The purpose of this role is to ensure that the group home/respite service operates in accordance with Ability West's Strategic Plan, policies, procedures, national legislation, and regulations, providing a home-like environment and reporting regularly to the Area Service Manager.

Key Duties

  • Oversee the general running of the designated centre.
  • Ensure residents are provided with a homely atmosphere, and their health and recreational needs are met.
  • Build respectful and equal relationships with individuals, promoting independence.
  • Manage and monitor the centre's budget, including staffing and expenditure.
  • Collaborate with the Finance Department on budget development supporting operational plans.
  • Ensure proper management of residents' personal finances with safeguards in place.
  • Create an environment encouraging personal development and independence.
  • Use person-first language in all communication.
  • Ensure full compliance with legislation and regulations.
  • Develop and implement person-centred programmes tailored to individual needs and aspirations.
  • Liaise with staff, professionals, and visitors, ensuring respectful and tactful interactions.
  • Maintain a safe environment through adherence to health and safety policies and risk management systems.
  • Encourage community participation and awareness of the service.
  • Keep records and submit reports as required.
  • Complete HR tasks weekly, log incidents promptly, and handle correspondence and reports.
  • Undertake driving duties if qualified.
  • Oversee medication management in line with policies.
  • Prepare rosters and manage staffing within budget and support needs.
  • Supervise staff, ensuring professional standards, training, and development.

Requirements:

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience in a management or supervisory role in health or social care.
  • Possess a Level 7 or higher health-related qualification on the QQI framework in nursing, social care, or health science.
  • NMBI registration.
  • Proven experience managing a residential service meeting quality and legislative standards.
  • Proven track record in budget management.
  • Experience in report writing, personal support plans, and staff roster management.
  • Full current driving license.
  • Excellent knowledge of legislative and regulatory requirements.
