Abbott Ireland Nutrition Division Cootehill Cavan
Abbott Nutrition produces a range of infant formulae in all pack sizes under the brand name “Similac”. To complement this range, the facility also manufactures follow-on formulae under the brand “Gain”. The key ingredient is liquid skim milk, combined with carbohydrate, vegetable oils, vitamins, and minerals. The product is blended, pasteurized, dried, and packaged at the site, then distributed to Europe, Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Latin America, and Canada.
Established in 1975, Abbott Nutrition in Ireland is the largest powder manufacturing facility for infant formulae within Abbott worldwide. Approximately 1,000 dairy farms in Ireland and Northern Ireland supply quality milk to the Cootehill facility, processing 500,000 liters daily. This reliable supply and Ireland’s reputation as a green, clean environment are of strategic importance to Abbott Nutrition.
Primary Function / Goals / Objectives
The Technician is responsible for consulting SOPs or equipment manuals for tasks, ensuring full understanding and adherence. Housekeeping is critical; all activities must follow the Housekeeping SOP. Maintaining cGMP compliance is a priority.
The role involves maintaining plant and equipment performance, providing utilities to manufacturing and general plant, troubleshooting, commissioning, and supporting FATs & SATs. The technician must perform fault diagnosis, adjustments, and checks to prevent faults, complete work orders safely and promptly, and adhere to safety procedures including hotwork, confined space entry, lockout/tagout, and working at heights. Developing in-depth equipment knowledge, supporting environmental compliance, training apprentices, and participating in RCA investigations are also key.
The technician should be adaptable to procedural updates and plant needs, work flexible hours, and support cross-functional training. They oversee follow-up actions post-downtime, liaise with suppliers, and support plant excellence activities.
Major Responsibilities
Supporting Business Excellence activities, maintaining plant and equipment performance, minimizing downtime, creating and updating work plans and training aids, supporting other plant areas, and tracking process performance.
Education Required
Recognized apprenticeship or trades certificates in Mechanical craft, senior or junior level.
Knowledge
Ability to read diagrams/drawings, troubleshoot equipment, with at least six months on-the-job experience. Ability to work on platforms, scaffolding, ladders, and logical problem-solving skills. Competency in packing processes.
Accountability / Scope
Failure to adhere to cGMP can result in product recalls, environmental issues, and market impacts, including downtime and inability to produce.
