Role: Managing Director
Location: Leinster Region
Sector: Specialist Building Solutions
Type: Full-Time, Permanent
Package: Executive Package – To Be Discussed Confidentially
Role Overview
An established and growing construction business is seeking an experienced Managing Director to lead the next phase of its growth and development.
With approximately 50 employees and a strong reputation for delivering innovative building solutions across Ireland, the business is well positioned for significant expansion over the coming years.
The company already has an experienced and knowledgeable team across its key functions, including commercial, finance, manufacturing/production, technical and project delivery. As such, the Managing Director is not expected to be the technical specialist in every area of the business. Instead, the successful candidate will be an accomplished leader who can understand and respect the expertise within the existing team, bring people together and create the environment, structure and direction required for them to perform at their best.
Reporting to the Board and working closely with the senior directors of the business, the Managing Director will take overall responsibility for business performance, strategy, operational effectiveness, people leadership and sustainable growth.
The role requires a strong combination of leadership, commercial awareness, strategic thinking and people management. It could suit an experienced Managing Director, General Manager, Operations Director, Commercial Director, Construction Director or Regional Director who has the capability and ambition to lead an established business.
Key Responsibilities
Leadership & Business Direction
- Provide clear, steady and visible leadership across the organisation.
- Develop and implement the company's long-term business strategy in conjunction with the Board and senior leadership team.
- Lead the business through its next phase of sustainable growth and development.
- Translate the overall strategy into clear priorities, objectives and accountability across the organisation.
- Ensure the business maintains focus on its core strengths while identifying opportunities for future growth.
- Create an environment where experienced specialists and managers are empowered to perform effectively within their areas of expertise.
People & Team Leadership
- Lead, support and develop the existing senior management team.
- Recognise and utilise the specialist knowledge that already exists across finance, commercial, manufacturing, production, technical and project delivery functions.
- Establish clear responsibilities, expectations and accountability while giving managers the autonomy to lead their respective areas.
- Foster a positive, collaborative and performance-focused culture throughout the business.
- Promote strong communication between departments and ensure teams are working towards common business objectives.
- Develop organisational capability, succession planning and the future leadership structure of the business.
- Support the recruitment, development and retention of key personnel.
Commercial & Financial Leadership
- Take overall responsibility for business profitability and financial performance, supported by the company's experienced finance and commercial teams.
- Develop annual business plans, budgets and growth objectives in conjunction with the relevant senior managers.
- Maintain strong visibility of KPIs, financial performance, project performance and overall business health.
- Ensure appropriate commercial governance and financial controls are maintained across the organisation.
- Support senior-level negotiations and key commercial decisions where required.
- Balance growth ambitions with appropriate commercial discipline and risk management.
Operational Management
- Maintain oversight of operations across manufacturing/production, project delivery, commercial and support functions.
- Work through the existing management team rather than seeking to personally manage each specialist function.
- Ensure projects and operations are delivered safely, efficiently, commercially and to the required quality standards.
- Identify opportunities to improve processes, communication, systems and organisational effectiveness.
- Ensure departments work collaboratively and that issues affecting business performance are identified and addressed effectively.
- Provide the structure, leadership and decision-making required to keep the business progressing consistently.
Strategy & Business Development
- Work closely with the Board and senior leadership team to identify future market opportunities and areas for growth.
- Strengthen relationships with key existing clients and strategic partners.
- Support the development of new client relationships, projects, partnerships and long-term opportunities.
- Represent the company with key clients, industry stakeholders and strategic partners.
- Ensure growth opportunities are assessed against the company's capabilities, resources and long-term objectives.
Governance & Risk Management
- Maintain effective communication and reporting between the management team, Board and shareholders.
- Ensure appropriate corporate governance, legal, financial and health & safety requirements are maintained.
- Maintain oversight of key business risks and ensure appropriate mitigation measures are in place.
- Continue to develop the systems, reporting structures and management processes required to support a growing organisation.
- Ensure clear decision-making and accountability throughout the business.
Candidate Requirements
Experience
- Significant senior leadership experience within a construction, engineering, manufacturing, specialist contracting, project-led or similarly operational business environment.
- Previous experience in a senior leadership position such as Managing Director, General Manager, Operations Director, Commercial Director, Construction Director or Regional Director.
- Demonstrable experience leading and developing multidisciplinary teams.
- Strong commercial understanding, ideally including responsibility for P&L, budgets and overall business performance.
- Experience working with senior management teams and allowing functional specialists to lead within their respective areas.
- Evidence of successfully improving, growing or developing an established business or business unit.
- Experience operating within a project-led or operationally complex organisation would be highly beneficial.
Leadership Profile
The successful candidate does not need to come from a highly specialised technical background within the company's particular area of construction.
There is already significant specialist knowledge within the organisation across finance, commercial, manufacturing/production, technical and project delivery functions.
Of greater importance will be the candidate's ability to:
- Understand, respect and make effective use of the expertise already within the business.
- Get the best from experienced managers and specialist teams.
- Provide clear leadership without unnecessarily becoming involved in the technical detail of every function.
- Communicate effectively with employees, senior management, directors, clients and shareholders.
- Create clarity around responsibilities, priorities and accountability.
- Make balanced commercial and strategic decisions.
- Bring people together and ensure different areas of the business operate effectively as one organisation.
- Provide stability, direction and momentum as the company grows.
- Combine strategic thinking with a pragmatic, hands-on approach when required.
- Build trust across the organisation while being prepared to make decisions and hold people accountable.
This is an opportunity for an experienced business leader to take responsibility for an established organisation with a strong team and platform already in place, and to work alongside the Board and senior management team to shape and deliver its next stage of growth.
