Job description

Lightscape is looking for a Creative Technologist / Motion Designer to join our team in Dublin.

Full-time | Dublin | Hybrid + On-site

We're a creative studio working across motion design, projection mapping, interactive installations, live performance and large-scale visual experiences.

Our projects tend to sit somewhere between design and technology. One week you might be creating motion graphics with our studio team; the next you could be mapping a building, rehearsing a live show, testing an interactive installation or working with a production team to figure out how we're actually going to make an idea work.

We're constantly exploring new technologies and evolving how we work. We're looking for someone who is creative, technically minded, organised and curious — and who enjoys both making things and making things work.

The role

This is a hybrid creative and technical position, with your time split between working with our design team and delivering projects on site.

In the studio

You'll work alongside our in-house design team creating, adapting and preparing content for projects.

The motion-design element can range from relatively straightforward After Effects work, editing and content adaptation through to creating content for projection mapping, unusual screen formats, interactive installations and live performances.

You'll also be involved in the technical preparation and testing of projects, including:

  • Preparing show files and playback systems
  • Preparing and testing media-server and playback equipment
  • Testing interactive projects before they go on site
  • Preparing equipment and kit lists
  • Working with producers to specify equipment and technical resources
  • Testing content across unusual resolutions and display formats

This is a permanent studio role rather than solely a live-event position, so being comfortable with all aspects of production — preparation, testing, organisation and getting things finished — is just as important as performing well under pressure on site.

You'll help take projects from the studio through installation, rehearsal and operation.

Depending on the project, this could involve:

  • VJ and video playback operation
  • Projection mapping setup and operation
  • Technical supervision of interactive installations
  • Preparing and troubleshooting playback systems
  • Working with AV suppliers, technicians and production teams
  • Making last-minute content edits and adjustments
  • Rehearsing and operating live showsTesting systems and content before opening or showtime
  • Helping coordinate the technical delivery of projects on site

We're not necessarily looking for someone who can lead every project from day one.

For the right person, however, an important part of the role will be developing towards greater responsibility for the technical and on-site delivery of projects — eventually being capable of taking ownership of projects and leading our delivery on site.

What we're looking for:

Good working knowledge of:

  • After Effects

You'll also need demonstrable experience working in a live-event, production or similar technical environment.

We're particularly interested in people who can move comfortably between creative and technical work.

You don't need to be an expert motion designer, AV engineer or programmer.

You do need a good visual eye, an interest in technology, an ability to solve problems and a willingness to continually learn.

Reliability and ownership are particularly important to us. We work on live projects where things sometimes change quickly, so we're looking for someone who can remain calm, communicate clearly and take responsibility for getting things done.

Nice to have

Experience with any of the following would be useful:

  • Cinema 4D
  • Notch
  • TouchDesigner
  • MadMapper
  • QLab
  • Unreal Engine
  • Photoshop
  • Illustrator

Experience with projection systems, LED, media servers, video signal workflows, networking or interactive technology would also be an advantage as would a driving license.

Salary & progression

We're deliberately open to candidates at different stages of their career.

For someone earlier in their career, we're happy for this to be a role in which you develop your technical and on-site experience while working alongside an experienced team.

For someone with more experience, there is scope to take considerably more ownership of projects from the outset.

As your ability to independently prepare, deliver and take responsibility for projects develops, we would expect the role and level of responsibility to develop with it.

Salary range: €35k-45k depending on experience and skillset.

Working at Lightscape

We're a small team, which means you'll be closely involved in projects rather than working on one small part of a larger production line.

You'll have the opportunity to work across a broad range of projects, learn new technologies and experiment with a lot of hardware and software.

Some projects are technically challenging. Some involve unusual locations. Some involve figuring things out that we haven't done before. That's a large part of what we enjoy about the work.

And you'll be working alongside a group of very nice people who care about making good work.

This is a full‑time hybrid role based around our Dublin city‑centre studio.

As a general guide, we'd expect an average of around three days per week in the studio, with the remaining time split between working from home and working on site.

Because our work includes live events, installations and performances, evening and weekend work is a feature of the role. Time off in lieu is provided for work outside normal working hours.

Projects can also involve travel & overnights within Ireland and internationally.

We're happy to hear from candidates currently living outside Dublin or Ireland. However, because regular attendance at our Dublin studio is required, anyone considering relocating should familiarise themselves with the current availability and cost of accommodation in Dublin before applying.
