Job summary

Breedon Group plc is seeking a Construction Material Technician to join Aughnacliffe Quarry, Co Longford. You will assist in QA testing of quarrying and surfacing products, conducting on-site and off-site materials testing and updating electronic records.

You will test aggregates, bituminous and earthworks materials, perform lab checks, and help ensure quality standards while supporting operations in various contracts across Ireland and the UK.

Qualifications

  • Good level of literacy & numeracy; previous experience in a similar role is desirable but not essential.
  • Experience working in a team environment, providing information and support to colleagues.
  • Ability to be flexible in working hours, working night shifts or weekends if required.
  • Computer literacy, knowledge of Microsoft Office suite including Excel.
  • Driving licence to enable the post holder to fulfil the duties of the role.
  • Ability to carry out sampling of aggregates, concrete and asphalt, which involves manual handling and working in an outdoor operational environment.

Responsibilities

  • Test and sample aggregate, bituminous and unbound and earthworks materials including grading analysis, binder content and physical, chemical and mechanical testing in lab and on sites.
  • Conduct daily organoleptic checks for lab, production facilities and stockpiles.
  • Maintain a safe and tidy workspace and ensure efficient running of the laboratory.
  • Maintain quality standards by following company and accrediting bodies procedures.
  • Record sample details on test sheets and laboratory software.
  • Calibrate all testing equipment.
  • Prepare for inspections from accrediting bodies.
  • Undertake daily laboratory equipment checks.
  • Investigate material-related complaints and provide feedback/evidence.
  • Assist operational staff in quarry and depot activities.
  • Provide technical cover for other contracts within UK & Ireland.

Overview

We are currently seeking a Construction Material Technician to join our team at Aughnacliffe Quarry, Co Longford.

As a Construction Material Technician, you will be responsible for efficiently and effectively assisting in the quality assurance of quarrying and surfacing products. To conduct onsite and offsite materials testing and update electronic records.

  • To test and sample aggregate, bituminous and unbound and earthworks materials including grading analysis, binder content and physical, chemical and mechanical testing in a safe and efficient manner, both in the laboratory and on contracting sites/plant.
  • To conduct daily organoleptic checks for lab, production facilities and all stockpiles
  • To maintain a safe and tidy workspace and ensure the efficient running of the laboratory
  • To maintain quality standards by following Company and accrediting bodies quality procedures and protocol.
  • To record sample details on test record sheets and laboratory software.
  • To calibrate all testing equipment.
  • To prepare for inspections from independent accrediting bodies
  • To undertake daily laboratory equipment checks
  • To investigate all material related complaints & provide suitable & sufficient feedback & evidence to support.
  • To assist operational staff in daily quarry and depot activities
  • To provide technical cover for other contracts within UK & Ireland.
What we need from you!
Essential Criteria
  • Good level of literacy & numeracy, previous experience in a similar role is desirable but not essential.

Desirable Criteria
  • 3rd Level Qualification in Engineering or Science
  • Experience working within a similar role and/or within a Testing Laboratory or the wider construction, asphalt, concrete or quarrying industry
  • Experience of working with recognised accreditation standards, ie IS, EN, ISO, TII
  • Understand and have knowledge of all current Irish and European (IS & EN) standards, for aggregates, asphalt and concrete
