Job summary

Whitewater Group is seeking a skilled Commissioning Engineer to lead the safe, effective commissioning of water treatment systems across Europe. You will own commissioning activities, develop Sequences of Operation and test procedures, and collaborate with clients, vendors and project teams.

The role requires hands-on site work, strong technical writing, and the ability to travel regularly across Europe. Ideal candidates have 5+ years of commissioning experience in demanding sectors and fluency

Qualifications

• Minimum 5 years' commissioning experience on complex engineering projects.
• Experience within Data Centre, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Municipal, Power or similarly demanding sectors.
• Fluent English; other languages beneficial.
• Ability to travel regularly across Europe.

Responsibilities

• Lead commissioning activities from pre-commissioning through to handover.

About The Role

Due to continued growth across our European operations, Whitewater Group is seeking an experienced Commissioning Engineer to join our commissioning team.

The successful candidate will be responsible for the safe and effective commissioning of water treatment systems, ensuring that installed equipment, instrumentation and associated controls operate in accordance with the approved design, Sequence of Operations, client requirements and applicable standards.

This is a hands‑on, site‑focused role requiring an engineer who is technically strong, capable of taking ownership of systems, confident in fault‑finding across multiple disciplines and comfortable working directly with clients, project teams, vendors and subcontractors.

The role will also involve the production, review and execution of commissioning documentation, including Sequences of Operation, commissioning scripts, test procedures, FAT/SAT documentation and system handover records.

This is a Pan‑European role and will require regular travel across Europe. The ideal candidate will be based in Germany or Poland, or another Central European country, with availability to travel frequently.

Your profile

• Relevant degree, trade background or equivalent qualification in Mechanical, Electrical, Automation, Instrumentation, Process Engineering or a related discipline.
• Minimum 5 years' commissioning experience on complex engineering projects.
• Experience within the Data Centre, Pharmaceutical, Industrial, Municipal, Power or similarly demanding engineering sectors.
• Strong practical understanding of mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and control systems.
• Strong experience in the development and production of Sequences of Operation, commissioning scripts, test procedures and commissioning documentation.
• Ability to develop commissioning documentation from P&IDs, design specifications, control philosophies, equipment datasheets and client requirements.
• Experience commissioning pumps, valves, instrumentation, filtration systems, dosing systems, RO systems and associated water treatment equipment is highly desirable.
• Strong ability to read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, control drawings and technical documentation.
• Experience with I/O testing, functional testing, alarm and interlock testing, wet commissioning and system troubleshooting.
• Familiarity with PLC, BMS, SCADA and automated control systems.
• Experience with FAT, FWT, SFAT, SAT and system handover processes is advantageous.
• Strong technical writing skills with the ability to produce clear, accurate and comprehensive technical documentation.
• Strong communication skills and confidence engaging directly with clients, consultants, vendors, subcontractors and senior project personnel.
• Ability to work independently and take ownership of commissioning activities while also working effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Strong organisational and project management skills with the ability to manage multiple priorities across demanding project schedules.
• Strong attention to detail with a proactive and solutions‑focused approach.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Outlook.
• Experience with commissioning management platforms such as Procore, BlueRithm or similar systems would be advantageous.
• Proficiency in AutoCAD, Revit or similar engineering software is advantageous but not essential.
• Fluent English, both written and spoken.
• Must have the right to work in the EU.
• Full driving licence.
• Willingness and ability to undertake regular travel across Europe.

Main Duties And Responsibilities

• Lead and execute commissioning activities for water treatment systems from pre‑commissioning through functional testing, system proving and final handover.
• Verify that installed equipment and systems operate safely and in accordance with approved design documentation, technical specifications, P&IDs, control philosophies, Sequences of Operation and client requirements.
• Review commissioning readiness and identify outstanding mechanical, electrical, instrumentation, automation and controls‑related issues prior to testing.
• Carry out and coordinate I/O testing, functional testing, alarm and interlock testing, wet commissioning, system proving and integrated testing as required.
• Read and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, control drawings, equipment datasheets, I/O schedules, control philosophies, Cause & Effect matrices and other project documentation.
• Lead fault‑finding and troubleshooting activities across mechanical, electrical, instrumentation and automation systems.
• Work closely with Automation, Electrical, Mechanical, Project and Installation teams to identify root causes, resolve technical issues and ensure systems are progressed efficiently through commissioning.
• Coordinate with equipment vendors and specialist subcontractors during equipment start‑up, testing and system integration.
• Develop, produce and maintain Sequences of Operation (SOO) for water treatment systems, using P&IDs, design information, equipment specifications, control requirements and client standards.
• Develop, write, review and execute commissioning scripts and test procedures across the applicable commissioning stages, ensuring test steps, expected results and acceptance criteria are clearly defined.
• Produce detailed L2/L3 commissioning documentation, including equipment checks, I/O testing, functional testing, alarm and interlock verification, system proving and wet commissioning activities.
• Develop, review and maintain FAT, FWT, SFAT and SAT documentation where required.
• Review and update SOOs, commissioning scripts and test documentation following design changes, site modifications or issues identified during commissioning.
• Work closely with Automation Engineers to ensure PLC, BMS and SCADA sequences accurately reflect the approved Sequence of Operations and intended system functionality.
• Verify PLC, BMS and SCADA interfaces and confirm that control sequences, alarms, interlocks, permissives and instrumentation operate as intended.
• Review I/O schedules, alarm lists, Cause & Effect matrices and control philosophies to ensure commissioning documentation is technically accurate and complete.
• Manage commissioning documentation through the required review and approval process, incorporating client and consultant comments and maintaining clear revision control.
• Develop and maintain commissioning plans, trackers, schedules, punch lists, system completion records and supporting handover documentation.
• Manage commissioning activities across multiple systems and projects while ensuring key programme milestones are achieved.
• Monitor and close commissioning snags and defects, ensuring outstanding items are clearly recorded, assigned and tracked through to completion.
• Ensure completed commissioning scripts and test records provide a clear and traceable record of all testing carried out.
• Support the preparation and verification of final As‑Built, O&M and system handover documentation.
• Provide clear technical updates to the Commissioning Lead, Project Managers and client commissioning teams.
• Attend commissioning meetings, technical workshops, design reviews and site coordination meetings as required.
• Provide technical support and guidance to junior commissioning engineers and other project personnel where required.
• Provide training to clients and end users on the operation, maintenance and troubleshooting of commissioned systems.
• Ensure all commissioning activities are carried out in accordance with Whitewater Group's health, safety, quality and environmental requirements.
