Job description

The Clinical Floor Manager is responsible for the day-to-day operational and clinical management of the Institute of Eye Surgery (IOES), ensuring efficient patient flow, achievement of performance targets and delivery of high-quality patient care. Reporting to the Clinical Operations Lead, the role combines clinical leadership, operational oversight, theatre service coordination, resource management and people leadership across clinic and surgical services.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Operations & Patient Flow

• Lead daily clinic operations, ensuring safe and efficient patient flow and delivery of scheduled clinical and surgical activity.
• Coordinate appointments, diagnostics, room allocation and surgical lists to optimise capacity and patient experience.
• Identify and resolve delays, bottlenecks and operational issues in collaboration with consultants and multidisciplinary teams.
• Respond to patient concerns and maintain high levels of patient satisfaction.

Resource & Service Management

• Manage staffing rotas and ensure appropriate nursing, theatre, technician and administrative cover.
• Allocate resources effectively to meet service and patient care requirements.
• Oversee stock levels, consumables, medications and equipment, ensuring availability, cost-effective utilisation and theatre readiness.
• Support operational requirements across IoES locations and travel between sites as required.

Clinical Nursing Responsibilities

• Deliver safe ophthalmic nursing care, including pre-operative and post-operative support.
• Manage urgent presentations, casualty appointments and ophthalmic emergencies in accordance with scope of practice and organisational protocols.
• Administer medications and perform clinical assessments where appropriately trained and authorised.
• Liaise with consultants regarding patient care, investigations and follow-up requirements.
• Maintain professional competence through ongoing education and training.

Theatre & Surgical Services

• Support the development and operation of theatre services, including workflows, staffing, equipment requirements, SOPs and service implementation.
• Coordinate theatre activity to ensure safe, efficient surgical lists and effective use of resources.
• Standardise theatre setup procedures and implement surgeon preference cards.
• Monitor key theatre performance indicators, including turnaround times and delayed starts, and take action to improve efficiency.
• Provide scrub nurse support for intravitreal injection clinics and minor ophthalmic procedures where competent.
• Support recovery and discharge processes in line with established procedures.
• Provide clinical supervision, guidance and support to theatre, nursing and support staff.
• Ensure compliance with organisational policies, clinical standards, medication management processes and regulatory requirements.
• Support accreditation activities, audits, patient safety initiatives and quality improvement programmes.
• Ensure incidents, complaints, risks and near misses are appropriately reported, investigated and followed up.
• Promote infection prevention, health and safety and safe clinical practice.
• Contribute to the development, review and implementation of SOPs and clinical protocols.
• Participate in audit, risk management and incident review activities to support continuous service improvement.

Leadership & People Management

• Lead, develop and support nursing, theatre, technician and administrative teams.
• Participate in recruitment, onboarding, performance management, coaching and staff development.
• Monitor attendance, leave and employee performance in accordance with company procedures.
• Foster a positive, collaborative culture focused on accountability, communication and continuous improvement.

Qualifications & Experience

• Current registration with NMBI as a Registered General Nurse or equivalent relevant nursing registration.
• Minimum of 10 years' post-registration nursing experience.
• Minimum of 4 years' leadership or management experience in a clinical, surgical or theatre environment.
• Experience in patient flow management, clinical operations, rostering, incident management and quality improvement.
• Full clean driving licence and willingness to travel between IOES locations as required.
• Ophthalmology experience.
• Experience with ophthalmic assessments, intravitreal injection clinics, casualty services and JCI standards.
• JCHAPO qualification or willingness to undertake ophthalmic training.
