Job summary

Glanua Limited is seeking a Civil Design Engineer to join our Head Office in Galway. On-site role focusing on water and wastewater infrastructure, collaborating with process, mechanical, electrical and environmental engineers.

Responsibilities include site inspections, developing layout drawings, coordinating with engineers, and contributing to cost estimates and value engineering. Competitive base salary; 22 days leave + 10 bank holidays; EAP available.

Qualifications

  • Understanding of civil engineering principles and their application to water and wastewater infrastructure.
  • Familiarity with UE design standards, codes and guidance.
  • Awareness of geotechnical considerations (foundations, ground conditions, settlement).
  • Understanding of construction methods, constructability issues, and sequencing.
  • Awareness of health and safety considerations and risk management in design.
  • Technical design skills – conceptual layouts, GA drawings, pipe layouts.
  • CAD/BIM proficiency – AutoCAD & BIM 360 for preliminary designs.
  • Collaboration with processing, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineers.
  • Risk awareness – identify design and construction risks early.
  • Experience in water and wastewater projects.
  • Producing design reports, drawings, risk registers, input to cost estimates.
  • Sourcing quotations and input to target cost.
  • Experience with CAD, BIM 360.

Responsibilities

  • Carry out preliminary site inspections to identify constructability issues.
  • Supervise sub-contractors on site and record SI information.
  • Ensure HSQE documentation for site work – RAMS, SSWP’s, permits.
  • Source quotations and input to cost estimation for target cost submissions.
  • Liaise with design manager to evaluate alignment options for pipelines, tanks, pumping stations.
  • Develop initial layout drawings for treatment works and pipelines.
  • Coordinate with process, mechanical, and electrical engineers to align civil design with process.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews to align civil with other requirements.
  • Provide input to health & safety risks at early design stage.
  • Liaise with procurement to raise purchase orders.
  • Attend civil/structural design meetings with consultants.

The main knowledge, skills and experience required of the Civil Design Engineer are outlined as follows:
  • Understanding of civil engineering principles and their application to water and wastewater infrastructure (treatment works, pipelines, pumping stations).
  • Familiarity with UE design standards, codes and guidance.
  • Awareness of geotechnical considerations (foundations, ground conditions, settlement etc)
  • Understanding of construction methods, constructability issues, and sequencing at a preliminary stage.
  • Awareness of health and safety considerations and risk management in design.
  • Technical design skills – ability to prepare conceptual layouts, GA drawings, pipe layouts etc.
  • CAD/BIM proficiency – ability to use tools such as AutoCAD & BIM 360 for preliminary designs.
  • Collaboration & coordination – working closely with process, mechanical, electrical, and environmental engineers in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Risk awareness – ability to identify and communicate key design and construction risks early in the process.
  • Previous involvement in water and wastewater projects (e.g., treatment works, pumping stations, pipeline schemes, drainage networks).
  • Experience in producing technical documentation – design reports, drawings, risk registers, and input to cost estimates.
  • Ability to source quotations and provide input to target cost.
  • Experience with digital design software i.e. CAD, BIM 360.
The main duties and responsibilities of the Civils Design Engineer are outlined as follows:
  • Carry out preliminary site inspections to identify constructability issues, access, existing services etc.
  • Supervise sub-contractors on site and record relevant SI information.
  • Ensure HSQE documentation is in place for all site work – RAMS, SSWP’s, permits etc.
  • Source quotations from suppliers/sub-contractors and provide input to cost estimation for target cost submissions and value engineering workshops.
  • Liaise with design manager to evaluate potential alignment options for pipelines, tanks, pumping stations, or treatment facilities etc. Consider constructability, sequencing, and temporary works implications at a high level.
  • Develop initial layout drawings (general arrangement of treatment works, pipelines, structures, and access).
  • Liaise with process, mechanical, and electrical engineers to ensure civil design integrates with process requirements.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary design reviews/meetings to align civil works with process/electrical/mechanical requirements.
  • Provide input to identify health & safety risks at early design stage.
  • Liaise with procurement team to raise purchase orders.
  • Attendance at civil/structural design meetings with consultants.
