St Patrick’s Mental Health Services is seeking a Chief II Pharmacist to oversee the hospital pharmaceutical service and staff. The role is 0.6WTE (21 hours across Monday to Friday) with a permanent contract.

The post requires a registered Pharmacist with PSI or eligible, plus at least five years of hospital experience and strong administrative and managerial abilities. The salary range is €85,282–€107,641 with extensive benefits and development opportunities.

The role

Chief II Pharmacist

Part time, 0.6WTE, Permanent Contract.

St Patrick’s Mental Health Services seeks a Chief II Pharmacist to oversee and manage the pharmaceutical service in the hospital and all staff involved in providing the same.

Location

This position is based on site at; St Patrick’s Mental Health Services, James’s Street, Dublin 8, incorporating St Patrick’s Lucan and Dean Clinics and other services operated by St. Patrick’s Mental Health Services.

Responsibilities

• Ensure the purchase, storage and supply of all items is operated safely, appropriately and economically, consistent with quality at pharmacy, ward and department levels and with reference to legal requirements, clinical appropriateness, transit, security and conditions of chemical and physical stability.
• Maintain and implement standard operating procedures, protocols, and safe working practices, and ensure on-going quality control and validation of all services.
• Maintain records for purchasing, quality control, compounding and dispensing to the standards required.
• Participate in the hospital’s Drugs and Therapeutic Committee and other department/divisional hospital committees, as required.
• Ensure that the needs of the patients and professional staff are delivered in a manner that respects privacy and confidentiality.
• Develop and expand the clinical pharmacy service.
• Work in collaboration with Medical, Nursing, Management, and Allied Health Professional staff towards the development and implementation of evidence-based medicines management policies
• Provide advice and information to the relevant Pharmacy, Medical, and Nursing staff on best practice in relation to all aspects of medicines management including the proper and economic use of drugs and medicines and dissemination of information in relation to drugs and drug usage.
• Perform as supervising pharmacist of the Pharmacy where appropriate.
• Participate in the teaching, training (including in-service training), and supervision of pharmacy and other staff as may be required.
• P romote and actively participate in continuing professional development and research activities consistent with the post.
• Participate in audit, monitoring, analysis, and reporting of all aspects of medicine usage within the services, where appropriate including provision of feedback to prescribers and managers and involvement in the coordination of changes in practice required as a result of risk management process.
• Supervise and supply drugs, pharmaceuticals, and other related items as may be required.
• Assist in the implementation of hospital, regional and national medicines management policies.

Terms and Conditions

Tenure: Part time 0.6WTE, Permanent contract, pensionable as below.

Working Week: The post is 0.6 WTE, 21 hours, worked Monday to Friday from 9am to 5pm. Please note that you may also be required to be flexible in your working hours, depending on the requirements of your work and at the discretion of your management

Salary: The salary for the position is according to the Chief Pharmacist II (€85,282 - €107,641) 2026 salary scale, pro rata for the hours worked.

Annual Leave: 30 days pro rata (18 days) annual leave

Pension: All pensionable staff become members of the pension scheme upon commencement of employment. The scheme is a defined contribution scheme with a deduction from the salary of the employee of 4%. In respect of an internal appointment being made the individuals existing pension arrangements will continue.

Probation: The appointee will be appointed in a probationary capacity for the first six months during which time the job holder’s performance will be subject to ongoing review. Any extension to or suspension of the period of probation will be in line with the European Union (Transparent and Predictable Working Conditions) 2022.

Health: The appointee must be fully competent and capable of undertaking the duties attached to the position and be in a state of health such as would indicate a reasonable prospect of ability to render regular and efficient service.

Character: The appointee must be of good character.

Retirement Age: Normal retirement age for employees is 66 years which at present is also normal pension age.
