Job summary

Nazareth House Mallow is seeking a friendly Catering Assistant to join our kitchen and dining team in a residential care setting. You will assist with the preparation, cooking and serving of meals, and help plan varied menus that meet residents’ dietary needs.

Under the direction of the Director of Nursing, you will ensure high standards of hygiene, HACCP compliance, and cleanliness of all dining and kitchen areas, supporting a warm, person-centred dining experience for residents.

Qualifications

• Must have a Food Handling Course or equivalent training.
• Experience in dining-room work, preferably in a residential setting.
• Ability to adopt a person-centered approach.

Responsibilities

Nazareth House Mallow is a 120 ensuite bedroom nursing home. The following specialities are provided: Nursing Assessment, Continuing Nursing Care, Respite Care and Palliative Care. There is also an old chapel, coffee dock, hairdressers, a shop and more,

The nursing home is located near the village of Dromahane and 5 km from Mallow town. It is set on 15 acres in the heart of the 'Golden Vale' with its rich grasslands and rolling hills.

Job Title: Catering / Dining Room Staff

Location: Nazareth House Mallow, Dromore, Mallow, Co. Cork

Reporting to: Director of Nursing

Catering Assistant

Main duties:

• To assist in the preparation, cooking and serving of meals.
• To help in the planning of menus; offering choices and varied meals to the residents.
• Be aware of residents' special dietary requirements, e.g. diabetes, low calorie diets etc.
• Wash up after cooking meals, and ensure that all utensils are stored appropriately, and
• that the overall cleaning of the kitchen area is carried out effectively.
• To assist with checking deliveries and store in rotation.
• To work in a clean, tidy and organized environment.
• Record all relevant documents, i.e. HACCP
• Practice due economy in the use of resources.

Dining Room

Main Duties:

• Check that all appropriate foods are at the required temperature and record
• Daily check fridge temperature/s and record
• Ensure all tables are set correctly for each meal and provide each resident with a serviette/napkin as appropriate
• For residents who have breakfast in bed, ensure trays are appropriately set
• Cold food, e.g. cereals, cold milk, bread/toast, to be put on the tray first, and lastly
• hot food, e.g. porridge, tea/coffee.
• After meals, clear tables, collect tray trolleys from bedrooms, fill dishwasher and tidy kitchenette
• Wash down tables/place mats and check that chairs are free of food
• Finally sweep floor and wash as necessary; ensure you leave the area clean and tidy
• Mid morning, make tea/coffee and any nutritional drinks individual residents are required to take.
• Ensure that residents who require assisted-feeding are given the appropriate help.
• Follow rota for cleaning of kitchenette cupboards, fridge, surface areas etc. and record
• Consult and discuss with CNM2 any problems regarding residents unable to take a meal.

Catering & Dining

Health & Safety:

• Familiarize yourself with policies and procedures
• Be aware of HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points) and attend relevant training courses
• Record and store all relevant documents
• To ensure a high standard of food handling and disposal
• Hair to be tied back and concealed under appropriate head wear.
• Residents who have difficulty with swallowing etc. discuss with Nursing/Care staff regarding appropriate foods
• Observe floors for spills, food, etc. and attend to promptly
• Never use boiling water from boiler/electric kettle for any task other than making tea or coffee
• Report to Nurse-in-Charge any breakages of delph, loss of cutlery and any other damages to your area of work.

General:

Create an environment that is conducive to a relaxed atmosphere where residents can enjoy meal-times. Be economical with perishable and dry food stores and check use-by dates. Accept directions and advise of senior nurses. Use cleaning and other materials in accordance with regulations. Ensure that there is a regular supply of serviettes available at all meals.

Cleaning rotas pertaining to your job are available in each Unit to be filled in and signed.

Skills, Knowledge & Qualifications:

• Have Food Handling Course or other relevant training
• Have previous experience of dining-room work preferably in a residential setting
• Ability to adopt a person-centered approach
