Mechatronic Engineer (Biosensors)

The Digital Healthcare (DHC) business unit is seeking a motivated Mechatronic Engineer to support the development of a next-generation biosensor platform. This innovative system combines electrochemical and optical sensing technologies, microfluidics, electronics, algorithms, and control software to enable highly accurate and reliable biomarker measurements for diagnostic and therapeutic applications.

The successful candidate will play a key role in the design, development, and validation of advanced test and measurement systems used to characterize biosensor performance throughout research, development, and product lifecycle stages.

Key Responsibilities
  • Collaborate with-in a multidisciplinary engineering team to solve complex product development challenges.
  • Contribute effectively as a team player by actively sharing ideas, listening to diverse perspectives, and supporting collective success.
  • Lead the design and development of mechanical and fluidic test components, from concept generation through fabrication, assembly, and deployment.
  • Design, build, and optimize benchtop characterization and measurement systems for biosensor evaluation.
  • Identify opportunities for process and system improvements and drive continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Support experimental investigations, data collection, troubleshooting, and root-cause analysis activities.
  • Manage multiple priorities effectively while working independently with minimal supervision in a dynamic development environment.
Essential Qualifications & Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree (NFQ Level 7 or Level 8) in Mechatronics, Mechanical Engineering, Biomedical Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Alternatively, a Level 6 technical qualification combined with relevant industry experience.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to clearly present technical issues, findings, recommendations, and solutions.
  • Proficiency in SolidWorks or equivalent CAD software for 3D modelling, design validation, and technical drawing creation.
  • Hands-on experience with manufacturing and prototyping processes, including:
    • 3D printing
    • Injection molding
    • Mechanical fabrication and assembly techniques
Desirable
  • Minimum of 2 years' experience in a relevant engineering role.
  • Knowledge of fluidic or microfluidic system design.
  • Experience developing products within a medical device, diagnostic, or regulated environment.
Advantageous Skills
  • Basic understanding of electronics, instrumentation, or robotics systems.
  • Experience supporting the development, testing, or manufacture of medical devices.
  • Hands-on experience building and operating benchtop characterization or measurement setups.
  • Familiarity with data acquisition, automation, or experimental software tools such as Python or LabVIEW.
  • Knowledge of sensor characterization, verification, and validation methodologies.
