Job summary

Harmonics Recruitment is seeking an Automation Controls Engineer in Limerick, Ireland to join a client’s automation function. The role covers Siemens-based control systems development, testing, commissioning and ongoing support.

The position emphasizes PLC/HMI programming with Siemens TIA Portal, configuring PROFINET/Modbus Ethernet networks, and integrating hardware with existing equipment and infrastructure. Travel within Ireland and abroad may be required.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Engineering or a related discipline.
  • 3-5 years' experience in automation/controls engineering.
  • Strong PLC and HMI programming experience.
  • Siemens TIA Portal or Step 7 experience highly desirable.
  • Knowledge of PROFINET, Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP and/or IO-Link.
  • Experience with SCADA systems.
  • Experience supporting commissioning and customer/site activities.
  • Exposure to IoT/cloud technologies, ideally Siemens Insights Hub.

Responsibilities

  • Developing, testing and maintaining PLC and HMI programmes using Siemens TIA Portal.
  • Supporting automation hardware and software design.
  • Configuring industrial communication networks including PROFINET, Modbus TCP and Ethernet/IP.
  • Integrating control systems with existing equipment and infrastructure.
  • Testing, debugging and validating automation systems.
  • Supporting installation, commissioning, acceptance testing and customer handover.
  • Troubleshooting and fault‑finding on installed automation systems.
  • Supporting code updates, change control and code reviews.
  • Creating and maintaining technical documentation, manuals and test plans.
  • Supporting IoT and cloud‑connected automation solutions.

Job description

We are recruiting on behalf of our client for an Automation Controls Engineer to join their automation function. This is an excellent opportunity for an Automation/Controls Engineer with hands‑on experience in Siemens PLCs, HMI development, TIA Portal, industrial networks and commissioning.

The Role

You will support the development, testing, commissioning and ongoing support of Siemens-based control systems, including:

  • Developing, testing and maintaining PLC and HMI programmes using Siemens TIA Portal
  • Supporting automation hardware and software design
  • Configuring industrial communication networks including PROFINET, Modbus TCP and Ethernet/IP
  • Integrating control systems with existing equipment and infrastructure
  • Testing, debugging and validating automation systems
  • Supporting installation, commissioning, acceptance testing and customer handover
  • Troubleshooting and fault‑finding on installed automation systems
  • Supporting code updates, change control and code reviews
  • Creating and maintaining technical documentation, manuals and test plans
  • Supporting IoT and cloud‑connected automation solutions
What We're Looking For
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation, Computer Engineering or a related discipline
  • 3-5 years' experience in automation/controls engineering preferred
  • Strong PLC and HMI programming experience
  • Siemens TIA Portal or Step 7 experience highly desirable
  • Knowledge of PROFINET, Modbus TCP, Ethernet/IP and/or IO-Link
  • Experience with SCADA systems
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem‑solving ability
  • Experience supporting commissioning and customer/site activities
  • Exposure to Python, JavaScript, C++ or Java would be advantageous
  • Exposure to IoT/cloud technologies, ideally Siemens Insights Hub, would be beneficial
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills
  • Full eligibility/right to work in Ireland
  • Willingness to travel within Ireland and internationally when required
