Blood Transfusion Haematology

The purpose of this post is to participate in a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of the patients in cooperation with the Consultant Haematologist., Laboratory Manger, Chief Medical Scientist, Senior Medical Scientist and Staff Grade Medical Scientists. This post within the Blood Transfusion Haematology Department will report to the Senior and Chief Medical Scientist, Laboratory Manager and Consultant Chemical Pathologist.
Main Purpose Of Job
The Departments offers a large repertoire of tests including those that are accredited under ISO15189 and ISO22870 standards (see INAB 208MT for full scope of accreditation). Outside of routine Haematology and Blood Transfusion, the laboratories provide Haemoglobinopathy screening for adults and neonates, Lupus anticoagulant testing, and FMH estimation using Flow Cytometry. The laboratory is part of a multi-disciplinary team for the identification and management of antenatal patients with ra
re antibodies and those likely to cause HDN.
Interested and qualified staff are encouraged to participate in areas such as quality, training, and IT. The successful candidate will also be able to join the 2 person 'on call' multidisciplinary service – an excellent opportunity to develop skills in multiple disciplines.
Full time and job sharers will also be considered for this exciting role. The hospital campus is located in Dublin city center and is well served by all modes of public transport.
The Rotunda Hospital Dublin is the oldest continually operating maternity hospital in the world. It is now a large tertiary referral unit, delivering 8500 to 9000 women per annum. The Department of Laboratory Medicine in the Rotunda Hospital was established in 1902 and has been delivering a comprehensive Pathology service ever since. It is accredited to the ISO15189 standard.
List Of Duties & Responsibilities
General
- Maintain throughout the hospital awareness of the primacy of the patient in relation to all hospital activities and in adherence with hospital policies
- Participate in implementing a clinical laboratory service that supports the clinical needs of our patients
- Participate in training staff as required
- Participate in the implementation of operational processes to the standards of ‘best practice’, in order to optimise use of resources
- Participate in the implementation of a ‘quality management’ programme which is patient centred and which measures and audits performance and client satisfaction
- Actively participate in and promote continuing education and research activities consistent with the position
- Demonstrate behaviour consistent with the values of the hospital
- Comply with relevant procedures, methods and quality standards/policies as per the Quality Manual
Specific
- Perform routine work to the highest professional standards, as determined by the relevant laboratory Management Team
- Be responsible for the quality of their work and carry out their duties in accordance with laboratory and hospital policy
- Observe the strictest confidence when dealing with all aspects of patient or hospital information
- Participation is encouraged in out-of-hours laboratory emergency work according to hospital policy.
- In co-operation with the Consultant Head of Department, Chief Medical Scientist and other designated senior staff, participate in the introduction of new ideas and methods according to hospital policy
- Be flexible in this role and agreed to deputise for SMS and CMS where authorized
- Ensuring that the laboratory operates within a quality management system that meets the requirements of ISO 15189 Medical laboratories –Requirements for quality and competence and ISO 22870 Point of care testing (POCT)- Requirements for quality and competence
- Participate as required in the registration and stock level of laboratory reagents and materials
- Receive and record details of mishaps, complaints and defects in supplies and equipment, investigate the circumstances with appropriate team members and take the necessary action and report findings as required, and as determined by the Chief Medical Scientist
- Ensure the policy in relation to laboratory record keeping is followed
- Co-operate in evaluating new equipment and consumable items
- Participate and assist in carrying out the Major Emergency Plan for isolated incidents and multiple trauma according to the Laboratory Management Team policy
- Ensure, in co-operation with the Consultant Head of Department, Chief Medical Scientist and designated senior staff, appropriate compliance with the International and National Guidelines and standards of provision of Laboratory Services and actively participate in internal and external quality control and quality assurance
- Participate in the provision of appropriate statistical and management information
- Participate in the management and running of the computer-integrated laboratory system
- Make the most effective and efficient use of development in information technology for both patient care and administrative support in a manner, which integrates well with systems throughout the organisation.
Professional Knowledge
- Demonstrate good theoretical and practical knowledge of Blood Transfusion and Haematology.
- Demonstrate evidence of relevant experience in a medical laboratory.
- Demonstrate understanding of the role of Haematology and Blood Transfusion in Neonatal, Obstetric and Gynaecological patient management.
- Demonstrate knowledge of laboratory accreditation; participate in the development and authorship, and/or review and revision of SOP’s.
- Demonstrate understanding of the major features of a laboratory information system.
- Demonstrate commitment to continuing professional development
- Demonstrate evidence of computer skills and a willingness to develop IT skills relevant to the role
