Fermilab is seeking a USCMS Tier 1 Facility Manager to oversee the operation and provisioning of computing resources for the U.S. CMS collaboration. This role involves managing hardware, ensuring reliability, and coordinating with various teams to support physics goals. The ideal candidate will have a PhD in physics and significant post-doctoral experience. This position offers a hybrid work arrangement and competitive benefits.
The expected hiring range for this position is:
$86,900.00-$134,833.00.Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.
About the Role:
The Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Directorate (CSAID) at Fermilab invites applications for the USCMS Tier 1 Facility Manager. The position will be hired as an Application Physicist II with general characteristics listed below. The U.S. CMS facility is hosted by CSAID at Fermilab to provide computing resources and infrastructure services for the U.S. CMS collaboration to achieve their physics goals and provide contributions to the world-wide distributed computing infrastructure of the Compact Muon Solenoid experiment (CMS) at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) at the European Laboratory for Particle Physics (CERN) in Geneva, Switzerland.
The selected candidate will organize the provisioning and operation of computing resources and infrastructure services as directed by the U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program through CSAID and will receive funds from U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program for effort and computing hardware. The selected candidate will be a member of CSAID and work through the management structure of CSAID to organize hardware purchases, and coordinate hardware maintenance and service deployment and operation.
The successful candidate will receive guidance from the U.S. CMS Software & Computing Operations Program about the required performance and reliability of the deployed hardware, and which services are needed and at what performance to support the U.S. CMS community and the CMS experiment at large. The selected candidate will be responsible for the availability and reliability of the facility as monitored by the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid (WLCG).
