Job description

The expected hiring range for this position is:

$25.17-$32.54.

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

This position is not eligible for relocation assistance, referral bonus program and sponsorship assistance.

About the Role:

The FAST department at Fermilab is seeking a full-time Mechanical Technician II to join the team. The primary goals of the department are to support the existing and construction of new experimental setups for accelerator physics research. While there will rarely be two identical tasks, the core operations are similar to many other industrial environments, such as metalworking, assembling according to drawings, and communication with vendors and other departments.

What your day-to-day as a Mechanical Technician II at Fermilab will look like:

  • Fabrication, set-up, operation, testing, repairing, and/or modification of a wide variety of moderately complex electrical/electronic and/or mechanical equipment, systems, and devices for Laboratory projects/equipment in the assigned area, based on drawings, diagrams, and schematics.
  • Assisting in the construction and assembly of experiment and support equipment. Preparation and testing equipment for operation.
  • Writing procedures for finished work. Entering relevant work information into a database and/or personal logbook.
  • Producing reports as assigned. Electronic preparation and compilation of technical data and safety records for equipment using databases, spreadsheets, and other appropriate computing software and programs.
  • Moderately complex technical support and maintenance for a wide variety of instruments and equipment in the assigned area. Troubleshooting problems and conducting repairs as needed.
  • Procuring and maintaining inventories of small parts, supplies, materials, and equipment.
  • Assisting in the implementation and design of equipment and systems for the area of assignment. Driving quality in all job aspects. May assist in the design and development of equipment and systems.
  • Providing guidance to less experienced technicians. As assigned, may serve as shift supervisor for a specific project or task.
  • Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abiding by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health, and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

  • HS degree (or technical certificate or equivalent)
  • 3+ years of extensive related experience or up to 1 year of DOE laboratory experience.

Applicable Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required:

  • Possesses and applies comprehensive knowledge of electrical, mechanical, and/or ES&H technology concepts, practices, and procedures from extensive experience or academic study that is relevant to the assigned area.
  • Required to legally operate a government vehicle.
  • Metalworking: cutting, drilling, taping and manually forming simple shapes necessary for the assembly of the experimental equipment
  • Soldering and wire crimping as necessary for the termination of various signal cables.
  • Experience with metrology tools as necessary for quality control of basic mechanical parts, such as dimensional accuracy of procured and manufactured parts.
  • Operation of lifting equipment, such as manual hoists and overhead cranes.
  • Familiarity with CAD software to analyze drawings and technical specifications of existing designs

  • Onsite: This is an onsite role, and the candidate must be able to work from our Batavia office.
