Senior Geotechnical & Hydrology Engineer W/M

Weda Bay, a strategic source of ore and a major focus of the energy transition. Weda Bay Nickel, in which Eramet is a co-shareholder, is an integral part of the Group’s strategy to support the energy transition in a sustainable way by providing leading-edge solutions to meet the needs of the new metals era.

The Weda Bay Nickel mine, located on the island of Halmahera in northeast Indonesia, recently went into production in 2019. As part of a partnership with the Chinese steel group Tsingshan, the world’s leading producer of stainless steel and the majority shareholder of PT Weda Bay Nickel, Eramet brings its technical and operational expertise on the mining operations.

Job Summary

The Senior Geotechnical & Hydrology Engineer will be responsible for geotechnical engineering, waste dump and TSF support, water management, support to operations and closure, and mentoring and supervision.

Responsibilities
  • Geotechnical Engineering: design and validate pit slope angles, berms, and geotechnical risk profiles, conduct slope stability modelling and risk assessments, support core drilling programs and update geotechnical block models, install and monitor slope instrumentation, and provide geotechnical constraints for pushback and dump design
  • Waste Dump & TSF Support: design dump foundations and sediment pond configurations, assess and manage risks related to dump and TSF stability, and ensure integration of geotechnical aspects in tailings planning
  • Water Management: design, maintain and optimize mine drainage systems, plan and supervise implementation of dewatering systems, conduct hydrological and hydrogeological modelling, and monitor water balance and ensure compliance with discharge limits
  • Support to Operations & Closure: coordinate with mine operations during weather events and high rainfall periods, participate in closure and reclamation planning, and contribute to monthly risk reviews and compliance reports
  • Mentoring & Supervision: provide technical guidance to junior engineers and review and validate field implementation of designs
Requirements
  • BSc/MSc degree in Geotechnical, Civil, or Mining Engineering
  • Minimum 8 years in geotechnical and hydrology roles in mining
  • Strong knowledge in waste dump design, slope stability, and dewatering systems
  • Competence in software: Slide2, GeoStudio, Civil3D, Surpac, HEC-RAS, etc.
  • Familiarity with Indonesian mining and environmental regulations
  • Strong data discipline, experience with dashboards and database tools, and strong Excel, data modeling, and reporting capabilities
  • Leadership and mentoring capabilities, strong coordination across departments, and ability to work in field and base camp rotations
  • Clear communication and influence across technical/operational stakeholders, resilience and adaptability in remote, fast-changing contexts, and strong analytical and problem-solving mindset
  • Fluent English required, Bahasa Indonesia or Mandarin are valuable assets
