In a world where over seven billion people live, nearly one billion go hungry every night. Access to food, a fundamental human right, is frequently neglected. With challenges like climate change, water scarcity, and complex land management, the urgency for food security has never been greater. The Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF) is dedicated to tackling these issues. Our team of committed professionals is focused on advancing sustainable agricultural practices across the suboptimal lands that constitute two-thirds of Indonesia’s surface area. This suboptimal land, integral to local agricultural traditions, holds untapped potential for food production.
Suboptimal land, which includes areas with poor soil, limited water, or extreme weather, can be challenging for food production. However, sustainable agricultural practices offer a way to use these lands effectively for future food needs. Our communication efforts focus on raising awareness and inspiring action by showcasing how sustainability-driven approaches can turn suboptimal land into a key solution for global food challenges.
We are seeking an experienced Plant Pest and Disease Researcher to join our team. In this position, you will be responsible for conducting pest and disease research on horticulture and agricultural crops. This study on plant pests and diseases is part of an integrated study on food systems and sustainability, which is currently a key research priority for the Tay Juhana Foundation. Join us in building a future where nutritious and sustainable food is accessible to all.
ROLE DESCRIPTION
The Plant Pest and Disease Researcher is a key contributor to TJF’s mission of building sustainable food systems. This role focuses on studying and managing pests and diseases that affect horticultural and agricultural crops, with a particular emphasis on the coconut ecosystem—an essential component of Indonesia’s rural economy. Your work will involve researching the biology, spread, and impact of these threats, especially in the challenging conditions of suboptimal lands, and developing strategies to protect crops effectively.
You will explore questions such as: What pests and diseases are most prevalent in coconut plantations? How do environmental factors like soil quality or climate influence their spread? What sustainable methods can mitigate their damage? Your research will directly support TJF’s integrated study on food systems and sustainability, providing actionable insights to improve crop resilience and food security. You will partner with TJF’s internal teams, local farmers, academic institutions, and policymakers to ensure your findings lead to real-world solutions.
