Job description

In a world where over seven billion people live, nearly one billion go hungry every night. Access to food, a fundamental human right, is frequently neglected. With challenges like climate change, water scarcity, and complex land management, the urgency for food security has never been greater. The Tay Juhana Foundation (TJF) is dedicated to tackling these issues. Our team of committed professionals is focused on advancing sustainable agricultural practices across the suboptimal lands that constitute two-thirds of Indonesia’s surface area. This suboptimal land, integral to local agricultural traditions, holds untapped potential for food production.

Suboptimal land, which includes areas with poor soil, limited water, or extreme weather, can be challenging for food production. However, sustainable agricultural practices offer a way to use these lands effectively for future food needs. Our communication efforts focus on raising awareness and inspiring action by showcasing how sustainability-driven approaches can turn suboptimal land into a key solution for global food challenges.

We are seeking an experienced Plant Pest and Disease Researcher to join our team. In this position, you will be responsible for conducting pest and disease research on horticulture and agricultural crops. This study on plant pests and diseases is part of an integrated study on food systems and sustainability, which is currently a key research priority for the Tay Juhana Foundation. Join us in building a future where nutritious and sustainable food is accessible to all.

ROLE DESCRIPTION

The Plant Pest and Disease Researcher is a key contributor to TJF’s mission of building sustainable food systems. This role focuses on studying and managing pests and diseases that affect horticultural and agricultural crops, with a particular emphasis on the coconut ecosystem—an essential component of Indonesia’s rural economy. Your work will involve researching the biology, spread, and impact of these threats, especially in the challenging conditions of suboptimal lands, and developing strategies to protect crops effectively.

You will explore questions such as: What pests and diseases are most prevalent in coconut plantations? How do environmental factors like soil quality or climate influence their spread? What sustainable methods can mitigate their damage? Your research will directly support TJF’s integrated study on food systems and sustainability, providing actionable insights to improve crop resilience and food security. You will partner with TJF’s internal teams, local farmers, academic institutions, and policymakers to ensure your findings lead to real-world solutions.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Conduct thorough, hands-on research to identify pests and diseases affecting horticultural and agricultural crops, with an emphasis on coconut ecosystems.
  • Design and propose integrated pest and disease management (IPM) strategies that are sustainable, cost-effective, and tailored to the unique needs of farmers working on suboptimal lands.
  • Publish your findings in peer-reviewed scientific journals and contribute to TJF’s outreach efforts, such as writing reports, creating policy briefs, or leading workshops for farming communities.
  • Present in relevant conferences, seminars, and scientific forums to communicate research findings and stay updated on the latest developments in the field.
  • Collaborate with research institutions, universities, and relevant government bodies to align findings with current policies and scientific advancements.

COMPULSORY REQUIREMENTS

  • Fluency in written and verbal English.
  • A Master’s degree in a relevant field such as plant pest and disease science (ilmu hama dan penyakit tanaman), entomology, plant pathology, plant protection, agronomy, or crop science from an accredited university.
  • At least three years of research experience in plant pest and disease management, ideally in horticultural or agricultural contexts.

COMPETENCIES

  • Strong ability to conduct rigorous scientific research and analyze complex data, with a focus on developing innovative solutions to pest and disease challenges.
  • Demonstrated experience or exposure to food security and agricultural issues, particularly in the context of pest and disease management.
  • Proven track record in conducting scientific research, with at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal or equivalent outlet.
  • Self-driven, with the ability to manage multiple tasks, work independently, and meet deadlines.
  • Existing professional network within universities, research institutions, or NGOs working on agriculture, environment, or food systems.
  • Sensitivity to socio-cultural and environmental contexts, especially in working with local farming communities.
  • Proactive, self-motivated, and detail-oriented.
