Job description

The expected hiring range for this position is:

$86,900.00-$123,567.00.

Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such the scope and responsibilities of the position, qualifications of the selected candidate, business considerations, internal equity, and external market pay for comparable jobs.

This position is not eligible for relocation assistance, referral bonus program and sponsorship assistance.

About the Role:

Under limited supervision, the Radiation Physicist develops, implements, maintains and monitors programs by evaluating work conditions, environmental impact, and Laboratory operations affected by ionizing radiation hazards. Ensures compliance with applicable local, state and federal regulations, requirements and standards and US Department of Energy (DOE) Orders. May lead a significant portion of Fermilab's radiological control program or implement solutions to radiological problems in parallel with programmatic operations and goals of other environment, safety and health (ES&H) disciplines. Applies knowledge and experience to develop analytical solutions to radiological physics problems encountered at particle accelerators. May be responsible for ES&H review of process systems and accident investigations.

What your day-to-day as a Radiation Physicist at Fermilab will look like:

• Leading efforts to monitor the Laboratory's implementation of ES&H policies with special emphasis on those related to radiological control.
• Participating in several elements of the radiological control program.
• Leading and/or participating in efforts to perform radiation shielding calculations related to the control of radioactive material hazards, prompt radiation from accelerators, and radiological environmental releases.
• Leading investigations of radiological occurrences.
• Preparing radiological work control and technical documents.
• Supporting other Fermilab groups in the development of new scientific facilities with respect to radiological control.
• Evaluating radiological surveys and conducts analyses to keep doses as low as reasonably achievable.
• Participating in design reviews of new and modified facilities with respect to radiological concerns.
• Participating in program assessment and quality assurance activities, and maintains records related to assignment, including the conduct and evaluation of radiological surveys.
• Abiding by and being responsible for performing all duties in accordance with ES&H regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
• Performing other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Skills and Attributes for Success:

• Bachelor's degree in health physics or related field (e.g., physics, nuclear engineering, chemistry, biology) and 1-3 year of relevant experience, OR Master's Degree and 1+ year of experience, OR PhD and 6+ months of experience.
• Function independently, demonstrating self-motivation and initiative.
• Strong organizational capabilities, including coordination and prioritization of multiple projects.
• Must be flexible and able to quickly adjust to new of changing projects/tasks.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
HUMAN FACTORS:

• Knowledge of DOE regulatory requirements.
• Knowledge of ALARA principles, preparation of radiation work control documents, emergency decontamination, radiological instrumentation, and disposal of radioactive material.
• Ability to communicate effectively with the Laboratory user/visitor community and employees, management, and DOE officials as required.
• Skill performing calculations to categorize potential radiological releases to air and water.
• Skill with Monte Carlo modeling techniques
• Ability to work underground and climb stairs/ladders.
• Ability to visit and traverse work sites, indoors and outdoors.
• Ability to sit and/or stand for longer than 4 hours/day.

PHYSICAL FACTORS:

• Confined Space, Cryogens, Dry Environments (Clean Rooms), High Magnetic Field, High Noise Level, Ionizing Radiation, Oxygen Deficiency Hazard
• Ability and qualify for work in Oxygen Deficiency Hazard (ODH) and radiological areas.
