A leading coal mining group in Indonesia is seeking an experienced Legal Counsel to assist in all legal matters related to the group and its affiliates. The ideal candidate will have over 12 years of experience, strong knowledge of corporate law, and excellent communication skills. This role involves reviewing contracts, providing legal advice, and liaising with regulators. Competitive compensation offered with an on-site working arrangement.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in law, licensed to practice law in Indonesia (Peradi).
  • Minimum 12 years of experience at a reputable law firm or as in-house counsel.
  • Strong knowledge of corporate and commercial law, contract and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven track record advising on compliance, risk management, litigation, and dispute resolutions.
  • Excellence in communication and negotiation skills.

Legal Counsel

  • Assist Legal Director and Legal Manager on all legal matters related to Bayan Group and affiliates.
  • Review agreements and contracts before being signed by Bayan Group and affiliates.
  • Provide legal advice on legal matters and any lawsuits brought by or against the Bayan Group and affiliates.
  • Consult and advise Bayan Group and affiliates on any laws and regulations.
  • Liaising and interacting with regulators, government, external lawyers, advisors, and notaries.
  • Conduct due diligence for potential acquisitions as well as corporate exercises undertaken by Bayan Group.
  • Monitor compliance with statutory obligations.
  • Attend and assist with negotiations with customers, vendors, and business ventures.
Requirements
  • Bachelor’s degree in law, licensed to practice law in Indonesia (Peradi).
  • Minimum 12 years of experience at a reputable law firm or as in-house counsel. Experience in coal mining, plantation, or power plant industry will be an advantage.
  • Strong knowledge of corporate and commercial law, contract and regulatory compliance.
  • Proven track record advising on compliance, risk management, litigation, and dispute resolutions.
  • Excellence in communication and negotiation skills.
About Bayan Group

The Bayan Group is one of the largest coal mining groups in Indonesia with mines located in East and South Kalimantan. The Bayan Group produces coal ranging from semi-soft coking coal to environmentally-friendly low sulphur, sub-bituminous coal. The Bayan Group has exclusive rights to mine under five Coal Contracts of Works (CCOWs) and sixteen Izin Usaha Pertambangan’s (IUPs) awarded by the Government of Indonesia over a total concession area of 138,524 Ha, an area approximately twice the size of the country of Singapore.

Serving as an integrated coal producer, the Bayan Group has its own coal loading infrastructure. It owns one of the largest coal terminals in Indonesia known as the Balikpapan Coal Terminal with a throughput capacity of 15 million metric tonnes per annum and a stockpiling capacity of approximately one million tonnes across 16 stockpiles. It can fully load large Panamax vessels (up to 90,000 DWT) and partially load Cape size vessels (up to 200,000 DWT). It also operates 2 floating transfer stations.
