A leading e-commerce company is seeking a senior lawyer to lead its Indonesia Legal team. The role involves providing strategic legal advice, managing regulatory risks, and leading a high-performing team. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in corporate law, particularly within the technology sector, and strong leadership skills.
About the Role:
Lazada is seeking a senior lawyer to lead the Indonesia Legal team. The Indonesia Head of Legal will be part of the Lazada legal team, which is in charge of the legal, compliance and corporate secretarial functions of Lazada Group. This leader will join an established player in the highly competitive e-commerce sector, and become part of the larger Alibaba International Digital Commerce business group.
Key Responsibilities:
1. Strategic legal advice
• Deliver pragmatic, risk-calibrated, forward-looking and strategic legal advice on licensing, regulatory compliance, counterparty risk, and other critical legal matters.
• Act as trusted advisor to cross-functional teams to enable the launch of innovative products and services in a dynamic and competitive market.
• Monitor and anticipate legal and regulatory developments (e.g., trade, TMT, IP, data privacy, consumer protection and competition laws) and proactively advise on their impact on Lazada’s business and strategy.
2. Risk management
• Take charge of the management of regulatory inquiries, investigations and litigation, including coordinating the efforts of other functions (such as Government Relations, Public Relations).
• Establish and maintain internal governance processes to ensure enterprise-wide legal risk is proactively identified and managed.
3. Team management
• Lead and develop a high-performing team in Indonesia to provide timely, business-savvy legal support across all business units.
• Foster a culture of excellence, accountability, and continuous development within the Legal team.
• Ensure seamless coordination with regional legal counterparts to support cross-jurisdictional and strategic projects.
4. Contract Management & Negotiations:
• Lead negotiation and execution a high-value and complex agreements and transactions, including strategic partnership agreements and joint venture agreements.
• Design and implement fit-for-purpose contractual framework to support new projects and initiatives.
• Oversee contract lifecycle management and develop templates, playbooks, and contracting policies to drive consistency and efficiency.
5. Stakeholder and External Counsel Management:
• Manage relationships with external counsel to ensure high-quality, cost-effective legal services.
• Represent the company in key discussions with regulators, industry associations, and other external stakeholders.
Job Requirements
Qualifications & Experience:
A. Professional Background:
• At least 10 years of post-qualification experience, including at least 10 years in private practice (preferably within a reputable law firm’s Corporate Commercial and/or M&A practice group) and a minimum of 2 years in-house experience in a senior legal role (preferably within the technology, e-commerce, or digital services industry).
• Strong foundation in corporate and commercial law; experience in the technology or digital economy sector is highly preferred.
B. Technical Skills:
• Demonstrated ability to provide strategic legal counsel and risk-based solutions aligned with business objectives.
• Extensive regulatory knowledge relevant to the technology industry, particularly in areas such as: (a) operation of electronic systems and platforms, (b) data protection and cybersecurity, (c) digital supply chain and logistics, (d) employment and labor law, and (e) corporate governance.
• Proven experience leading complex litigation and dispute resolution, including strategy development and stakeholder management.
• Track record in designing and implementing corporate compliance frameworks to uphold strong governance standards and regulatory readiness.
C. Communication and Leadership:
• Strong leadership and team management capabilities; able to build and guide high-performing legal teams.
• Effective communicator who can distill complex legal concepts into clear, actionable advice for cross-functional stakeholders and senior leadership.
• Skilled in influencing decision-making at the executive level and participating in high-level strategic discussions.
