Job description

Grease Formulation Analyst (Saponification R&D)
Grease Formulation Analyst (Saponification R&D)

Location: North Jakarta, Indonesia
Division: R&D (Research & Development)
Employment Type: Full-time

About the Role

CHAMPOIL Indonesia is seeking a detail-oriented and scientifically rigorous Grease Formulation Analyst specializing in Saponification Research & Development. This role is ideal for a chemist or chemical engineer with a deep understanding of lithium-based grease formulation, soap thickener systems, and the complexities of saponification reactions, especially when working with reclaimed or non-conventional base oils.

You will be responsible for optimizing thickener formation, troubleshooting soap quality issues, and supporting continuous innovation in high-performance grease systems.

What You'll Be Doing

Designing and executing lab-scale saponification reactions with various fatty acid and alkali combinations (e.g., 12-HSA, stearic acid with LiOH or Ca(OH)₂)

Conducting stoichiometric calculations and iterative pH/acid-base titrations to ensure complete soap formation with minimal free fatty acid or alkali residual

Analyzing grease samples for consistency, penetration, drop point, and % residual alkali using appropriate wet-chemistry and instrumental techniques

Investigating the impact of base oil quality (e.g., Group I–III, used oil, synthetic) on soap structure, emulsion stability, and grease performance

Implementing pretreatment and filtration strategies for reclaimed oils to reduce contaminants that interfere with thickener formation

Collaborating closely with the Production and QA teams to scale up lab-validated formulations into consistent batch production

Documenting formulation parameters, test results, and adjustment protocols in detailed technical reports

Participating in cross-functional R&D projects related to new thickener systems (e.g., complex lithium, calcium sulfonate) and formulation cost-reduction initiatives

What We're Looking For

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Materials Science

Minimum 3 years of experience in grease formulation, preferably with exposure to lithium or calcium-based thickener systems

Strong understanding of saponification chemistry, stoichiometry, and soap emulsification behavior

Familiarity with quality parameters in grease production: NLGI consistency, drop point, oil separation, penetration, etc.

Experience with laboratory titration, FTIR, Karl Fischer, and pH monitoring techniques

Knowledge of the challenges associated with using used or reclaimed oils in grease manufacturing

Excellent documentation, data analysis, and scientific troubleshooting skills

Comfortable working in a fast-paced R&D environment and interfacing with production teams

What We Offer
