Job description

The CSG Relationship Manager is a seasoned professional role with a strategic focus on North Asia investment corridors, encompassing Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan. The incumbent applies in-depth disciplinary knowledge, contributing to the development of new techniques and the improvement of processes and workflow for the area or function. This role integrates subject matter and industry expertise within the North Asia financial landscape, requiring a deep understanding of regional business culture, market dynamics, and cross-border investment flows. The role requires an in-depth understanding of how areas collectively integrate within the sub-function, as well as the ability to coordinate and contribute to the objectives of the function and overall business. The incumbent evaluates moderately complex and variable issues with substantial potential impact, where development of an approach or taking of an action involves weighing various alternatives and balancing potentially conflicting situations using multiple sources of information. Strong analytical skills are required to filter, prioritize, and validate potentially complex and dynamic material from multiple sources. Strong communication and diplomacy skills — including culturally sensitive engagement with Chinese-speaking clients and stakeholders — are essential. The role regularly assumes informal/formal leadership within teams, is involved in coaching and training of new recruits, and has significant impact in terms of project size and geography by influencing decisions through advice, counsel, and/or facilitating services to others in the area of specialization.

Responsibilities
  • Client Relationship Management Calls on clients to deepen relationships and proactively owns, responds to, uncovers, and anticipates future needs, roadblocks, risks, and expectations — with particular sensitivity to relationship-centric engagement norms prevalent in Chinese business culture (e.g., the role of guanxi in building long‑term trust)
  • Serves as the clients' primary contact point and is responsible for managing internal departments to address any customer service issues
  • Introduces solutions to clients in building and strengthening an effective portfolio, tailoring communication styles and engagement approaches to align with the preferences of Mainland Chinese, Hong Kong, and Taiwanese business counterparts
  • Maximizes client experience by proactively sharing market updates, trends, and intelligence, with a particular emphasis on North Asia macroeconomic developments, regulatory changes, and cross-border investment corridor dynamics
Business Development
  • Works with product specialists and subject matter experts to structure innovative and customized solutions that meet clients' individual needs, incorporating awareness of regional regulatory environments (e.g., HKMA, PBOC, FSC Taiwan)
  • Identifies cross-sell opportunities to deepen and increase share of wallet across the North Asia investment corridor
  • Assists Senior Relationship Manager or Team Leader in the research and identification of prospective clients within the Greater China region
  • Networks with clients to identify avenues for new business opportunities, leveraging cultural fluency and local market insight to build trust‑based relationships
  • Drives innovation in the solutions provided to clients and further develops business where necessary and appropriate within the North Asia corridor context
  • Must have a sharp business development focus and demonstrate innovative approaches to meeting client needs across diverse cultural contexts
Deal Structuring & Credit
  • Supports Senior Relationship Managers in structuring deals that balance risk and reward, including cross‑border transactions specific to the China–Hong‑Kong–Taiwan investment corridor
  • Prepares and oversees new transaction submissions and annual reviews for submission to in‑business credit lending management and the independent risk department
  • Demonstrates ability to close deals and proficiently manage the credit origination process, gather and maintain credit documentation, and monitor accounts
  • Actively protects Citi's assets and reputation by acting as the first line of defense from a credit risk management perspective
Compliance & Risk Management
  • Works closely with the Case Manager on the onboarding and retention of clients, ensuring the appropriate "Know Your Client" (KYC) and other compliance deliverables are met, including requirements specific to clients domiciled in or transacting through Greater China jurisdictions
  • Ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and Citi's policies/guidelines at all times, with awareness of cross‑border regulations relevant to China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan
  • Appropriately assesses risk when business decisions are made, demonstrating particular consideration for the firm's reputation and safeguarding Citigroup, its clients and assets, by driving compliance with applicable laws, rules and regulations, adhering to policy, applying sound ethical judgment regarding personal behavior, conduct, and business practices, and escalating, managing, and reporting control issues with transparency
Cultural & Market Intelligence
  • Demonstrates an understanding of Chinese business culture, including hierarchical decision‑making structures, the significance of face (mianzi), indirect communication norms, and the importance of long‑term relationship cultivation over transactional engagements
  • Applies knowledge of regional differences across Mainland China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan — including variations in business etiquette, legal frameworks, and investment preferences — to deliver a culturally nuanced client experience
  • Proactively shares relevant geopolitical, regulatory, and macroeconomic intelligence pertinent to the North Asia investment corridor
Qualifications
  • Experience 5–8 years of relevant banking or financial services experience, preferably with meaningful exposure to Greater China markets (Mainland China, Hong Kong, and/or Taiwan)
  • Sound knowledge of banking and investment products and processes, as well as a track record of providing sound banking and financial advice and solutions to clients operating within or across the North Asia corridor
  • Demonstrates core credit skills
  • Demonstrates an intermediate level of Early Warning Detection skills
  • Demonstrates the ability to close deals and proficiently manage the credit origination process, gather and maintain credit documentation, and monitor accounts
  • Demonstrates an advanced understanding of accounting principles, financial modeling, and statement analysis
Language Skills

Intermediate to Advanced proficiency in Mandarin Chinese is required — this includes the ability to conduct client-facing meetings, negotiations, and presentations in Mandarin, as well as to review and comprehend standard business documents written in Simplified or Traditional Chinese; Proficiency in Cantonese is considered a strong asset, particularly for coverage of Hong Kong‑based clients; Excellent written and spoken English communication skills are required for internal reporting, documentation, and cross‑border collaboration. Language proficiency will be assessed as part of the interview process. Candidates may be asked to demonstrate Mandarin capability through a structured language assessment.

Cultural & Regional Knowledge
  • Demonstrated understanding of Chinese business culture, including but not limited to: the concept of guanxi (relationship networks), mianzi (face/reputation management), hierarchical decision‑making, gift‑giving etiquette and its compliance boundaries, and the importance of patience and long‑term relationship building
  • Familiarity with the business and regulatory environments of Mainland China, Hong Kong SAR, and Taiwan, including relevant trade, investment, and financial regulation frameworks
  • Prior experience working with Chinese state‑owned enterprises (SOEs), family‑owned conglomerates, or high‑net‑worth clients of Chinese origin is advantageous
